Fenech’s late strike sinks Floriana

Hamrun Spartans boosted their chances of avoiding the drop when they had the better of Floriana 2-1 at the Hibs Stadium this afternoon.

The Spartans enjoyed the better share of proceedings in the first half and it was no surprise when Gaetan Spiteri fired them ahead when he chipped the ball over Bernard Paris after 20 minutes.

Floriana came back strongly after the break and managed to draw level on

69 minutes when Ryan Darmanin’s long range drive flew past the helpless Casha.

However, it was the Spartans who had the final say three minutes from time when new signing Obinna Obifuele released Ian Zammit whose low drive hit the upright and from the rebound Roderick Fenech was on hand to tap the ball home.

The win lifted the Spartans on top of the Relegation Pool, two points clear of Floriana and five ahead of Msida St Joseph.

Gaetan Spiteri was voted as the BOV Player of the Match.
