Industry clusters have the power to accelerate the growth of a knowledge-based economy, Smart City Malta country director Jin Choi told an international seminar on 'ICT - enabled sustainability in smart cities' organised recently by Malta Investment Management.

The country director elaborated on the 'smart city' concept in relation to the 2010 ICT Policy Support Programme and to the Smart City Malta strategy in particular.

"Smart City Malta was a development in line with Malta's economic vision," he said. "The project aims to realise Malta's vision to be the regional centre of excellence, to give quality life to knowledge workers, and to be the leading business district in the region."

The event was organised by the CIP Malta National Contact Point within Malta Investment Management Ltd and the Malta-EU Steering and Action committee.

It aimed to showcase specific funding opportunities under the 2010 ICT Policy support Programme's Theme 1 'ICT for a low carbon economy and smart mobility' and Theme 4 'Open innovation for future internet enables services in smart cities'.

The seminar was opened by Infrastructure Minister Austin Gatt and concluded by Chris Said, Parliamentary Secretary for Public Dialogue and Information.
