CareMalta has launched information sessions for families and carers of elderly people living in the community.

The training sessions are held with the collaboration of local councils and will be tackling various issues related to the care of elderly people, including dementia.

Speaking about dementia, Rosette Farrugia Bonello, the lead trainer, said that "it is absolutely essential that more training and education is given about dementia, its effects and how to handle someone with the condition".

CareMalta said dementia was one of the most common afflictions to affect older adults, with about 5,000 in Malta and Gozo.

Attendance at the first session, held at the parish centre in Attard, was strong, according to the organisers. Further sessions are scheduled to be organised across Malta and Gozo, including Sliema, Dingli, Mellieħa, Vittoriosa, Valletta and San Lawrenz.

CareMalta CEO Alex Tranter said this was an active part of the company's commitment in as-sisting the improvement of the quality of life of Malta's older generations.
