Opposition leader Joseph Muscat was today given a rundown over how the French presidency led its presidency of the European Union.

Dr Muscat who was invited to France by the French government, was given the exposition during meetings at the French Foreign Ministry. He also had meetings with officials from the Prime Minister’s office.

A discussion on France’s preparations for the Presidency was carried out.

France’s experience was of particular interest because it was one of the founder members of the union. The exposition was also of particular importance because the next Maltese government is to be responsible for the EU presidency in 2017, the PL said in a statement.

It said Dr Muscat was also given an overview of the position of France on a number of issues at European level, including migration. The country’s perspective on the new EU budget, which is to start being debated soon, was also discussed.

The meetings also discussed the Lisbon Treaty which should see both Malta and France increasing the number of MEPs.
