The nine-year-old boy who earlier this week threatened his teacher at the San Gwann primary school is to continue being followed by the Educational Services Directorate, which would ensure that he got all the help he required.

The directorate said in a statement it would be doing its utmost to ensure that the boy received the care and services he needed so that he would not be a danger to his colleagues or teachers.

The boy, who has behavioural problems so much so that he is helped by a learning support assistance, verbally threatened his teacher with a paper knife and later with a pair of scissors last Wednesday.

No one was injured and the boy seemed very disturbed. The teacher remained calm and controlled the situation professionally.

The directorate said that the school sent for the boy’s parents and the boy was immediately suspended.

However, the directorate was to continue following the child, as it has been doing for some time, and give him all the required help. Other work was also being done with the boy’s family.

Yesterday, the boy returned to school and as soon as he was seen in the grounds, the school’s administration convinced him to leave quietly.

The directorate and the school’s administrators were committed to ensure that the school’s environment remained calm and problem free. Together with the Sta Klara College, which the school formed part of, the directorate thanked the teacher and the LSA as well as the school’s administration for the professional way in which they handled the situation.

The directorate noted that this was an isolated incident and thousands of children daily went to school without any difficulty or danger.
