The editorial of The Times of March 3 is an attempt to reinforce PN strategy, that of singling out the GWU which was democratically taking part in the protest organised by the Għaqda Unions Maltin (GħUM) against the hefty increase in the utility tariffs.

When referring to taking Malta back to times past, perhaps the editorial was referring to when the UĦM was protesting against the rise in utility tariffs under the Labour government in 1998, however, to our knowledge, The Times then not only failed to condemn the protest but in fact supported it. Nothing was said then that investment was being threatened or that jobs were not being safeguarded even though the UĦM decided to block the Freeport and also when it demanded a wage increase of €25 per week.

Furthermore, this newspaper, that champions itself as being one of the so-called independent media in Malta, did not even utter a word to defend the right of the GħUM to hold a peaceful and democratic manifestation or against the political bullying and insults hurled against the GħUM leaders on various newspapers, TV and radio programmes and blogs. Perhaps it is ripe for The Times to start truly reflecting public opinion and the hardship that the people in general are going through at present.

Only then will it be a more credible newspaper for the benefit of its readers and of our country. At the end of the day it is our people and industry that lost last Monday, not the protesting unions!
