Teachers and nurses constituted the largest groups within which public service recruitment was made last year.

Figures given in Parliament show that a total of 425 men and 819 women were engaged last year. No details were given on how many retired or left.

The biggest single group of recruits consisted of 185 teachers, which was supplemented by 81 kindergarten assistants, 92 supply learning support assistants and 32 supply teachers.

The health sector saw the engagement of 139 full time staff nurses and 58 housemen along with a number of temporary nurses.

The only labourer to be engaged was a woman recruited by the Office of the President. The President also got a new chef, a driver and a communications coordinator, as is the norm whenever a new head of state takes over.
