Mater Dei Hospital is to become ‘smoke free’ in future for the benefit of the people’s health, the Health Promotion Department said in a statement.

It said that hospital workers were currently being trained to help other workers who smoked find assistance to help them quit.

The unit, together with the hospital management, set up an exhibition of warning adverts against smoking and was taking part in radio and television programmes to encourage people to stop smoking.

The Health Promotion Department was also taking part in the European Smoke Free Award 2009 campaign and was actively involved in the Help for a life without tobacco initiative.

The aim was to create a conscience on the smoking problem to encourage people to stop.
