In 1996, the GWU did not think it was in the workers' interest to take to the streets to protest against the Labour government's price hike. Instead it ordered a scientific study which never even saw the light of day. During a heated discussion programme on national TV (March 1) Tony Zarb said that the GWU had remained passive because the bills were never sent out. May I remind Mr Zarb and Co. that we never received the water and electricity bills because the Labour government of the day collapsed and not because Labour changed its mind!
Today, the price of fuel stands at over $80 per barrel and rising. Hence the increase in utility tariffs.
