Old Aloysians' devotion

Mass at Sarria church in Floriana will be said for Old Aloysians every First Friday of the month at 6.30 p.m. starting this Friday. The next Mass will be held on May 7.

At the Old Aloysians 1945-51 reunion held in January, Fr Robert Wirth SJ, himself an Old Aloysian, proposed to start holding a first Friday Mass each month for those Old Aloysians who desire to continue, or take up again, the practice of the nine First Fridays.

The Jesuit Fathers used to insist on promoting and fostering the devotion to the Sacred Heart among the students. It was at the basis of the spiritual formation they gave their students. They spared no effort to prepare them for the Thursday confession and then the Friday Holy Communion, which used to be celebrated with much solemnity.

This they did in response to the wishes of the Sacred Heart who manifested himself to St Margaret Mary Alacoque. Jesus asked this Visitandine nun to spread among the faithful the devotion towards his Heart and to entrust its wide spreading to her spiritual counsellor the Jesuit St Claude de la Colombier and to the Society of Jesus. The Holy Mother Church welcomed such devotion and assigned this "mission" primarily to the Society.

Among the promises expressed by the Sacred Heart to Margaret Mary stands out the one often referred to as the Great Promise. It runs: "To all those who on the First Friday of nine successive months receive the Holy Communion, I promise to grant the grace of final perseverance. They will not die in my disgrace, and, if necessary, they will receive the last sacraments; my Heart will be a sure haven for them at their extreme moment."
