The Malta Union of Teachers insisted today that it was consistent in its policies, and in 1997 it had taken part in a demonstration organised by the UHM against high utility tariffs, which the then Labour government wanted to introduce.
In a statement, the MUT denied claims made by UHM officials that their union was alone in the 1997 protests.
"This is absolutely not true. The MUT took an active part in that manifestation," the union said.
The MUT also pointed to footage of the 1997 protest when a small group of people used insulting and vulgar language against the Labour government and its then leaders.
"The MUT condemns the irresponsible actions of these few people in the same way as it unreservedly condemns the actions of the small number of people from among the many thousands who attended yesterday's protest, the teachers' union said.
