A former supervisor at Lidl supermarket in Sta Venera has been charged with stealing €2,680 in cash after the management noted that the cash bag he was responsible for was missing.
Taking the witness stand, Police Inspector Joseph Agius said that 22-year-old Dunstin Sims had been reported by district manager Romina Zammit as the person she suspected of having taken the money on February 3.
Mr Sims, who denies the charge, was a supervisor at the branch and it was his job to close the cash machines and deposit the money into a chute which would take it down to a safe from where it would be collected.
However, when the bags were counted, there was a missing bag which he was responsible for. When the company questioned him, he blamed another supervisor who was on the shift following his, the inspector said.
However, Inspector Agius said Mr Sims gave him a different version, telling him he could have made a mistake when he placed the bag in the shoot and it was possible that it did not drop down into the safe.
Mr Sims had already been warned by the company once before about cash missing from a till, the inspector added.
Moreover, when word spread about Mr Sims's arrest, the owner of a pastizzeria across the road from the Lidl store had told the inspector that on the same day that Mr Sims allegedly stole the money, Mr Sims had asked him to exchange €70 worth of coins for notes.
The case continues.
