Almost 400 companies were assisted last year to invest in new product lines, as well as research and innovation, mostly through assistance by Malta Enterprise and EU programmes, the Prime Minister said this morning.
Speaking during a tour of Abertax Technologies Ltd in Corradino, Dr Gonzi said this was an example of companies which had managed to translate their research into market applications.
The government, Dr Gonzi said, had also placed more focus on industry-related research at the University, to ensure, as far as possible, that resources were not duplicated. 19 companies received assistance specifically for research and innovation.
Abertax Technologies produces battery management units, battery monitoring systems, capacitive level sensors and gas release valves. It has also developed magnetic valves for industrial cleaning machines and for roof tanks and storage tanks.
Dr Gonzi was accompanied by Finance Minister Tonio Fenech and University Rector Juanito Camilleri.
