A couple have been handed down a six-month jail term suspended for one year after assaulting three policemen in St Julians on Wednesday evening.

The two, Kerrie Gannon, 29, and her 33-year-old boyfriend, Richard Vella, were having a fight in the street when police on patrol intervened and asked if everything was alright.

The three officers arrested Ms Gannon after she became aggressive and Mr Vella then told them they would have to arrest him too if they took her away.

The police were forced to oblige when Mr Vella tried to get into the police car in a bid to have himself arrested, even as Ms Gannon was trying to get out from the other side of the vehicle.

Magistrate Jacqueline Padovani handed down a six-month prison sentence to both, suspended for a year.
