It is acceptable to see hundreds of government registered cars buzzing about in Valletta in the morning but what I cannot understand is why hundreds of small GVN and rented government vehicles are left in the city during the night.

I am not talking of the ministers' courtesy cars but the smaller vehicles used by messengers and civil servants.

They are left in the city for one purpose, to save the parking spaces for their own cars come the next morning.

No wonder several letters have been written stating that although parking is free in Valletta after 6 p.m., it is rather hard to find a space, in particular in the commercial zone which needs a turnover of spaces to accommodate visitors.

To add insult to injury, a lot of these cars are left in white marked spaces instead of the yellow reserved spaces. I am sure that heads of department could, if they wanted to, instruct their subordinates to take the cars with them.

I still believe that a large space should be organised for the dispatching of GVN cars. You call one when you need one. Such a system would get rid of congestion in Valletta and would only cost the users of these vehicles a few minutes extra.
