Disappearance of skips
As a resident of Kappara, which falls under the San Ġwann local council, I would like to protest strongly against the recent removal of two green skips from Buqrajq Street.
The local council recently stated that the removal of skips would be in prominent residential areas where they are an eyesore. To the very contrary of this, may I stress that the above mentioned street can almost be called a private road with 48 residences, all of whom now leave their garbage bags outside to the feasting of cats and rats alike, since this area is very green with trees and so on.
I called the local council and they informed me that it was recently decided to adopt door-to-door collection of garbage bags. On Tuesdays and Thursdays the grey bags would be collected, the rest of the days the normal black garbage bags would be picked up.
I can't for the life of me imagine why such a clean, tidy system has been changed to cause a lot of filth and inconvenience. May I add that the skips just outside Minister George Pullicino's residence in the road parallel to the one mentioned (more of a main road) are still there!
Why change a good system? Mind boggling!

The council should also try to improve the collection from the bring in sites! The sites are always full and it is impossible to dispose of waste such as glass! We are encouraged to recylce, but have no place to, and if you dare leave a bottle or a box near the skip you will be fined!!! I'm totally against the piling up of waste near the bring in sites, but the council should make sure that these are emptied more often!

There is still a green skip in Triq Gjagjinti- and the rubbish piled up OUTSIDE the skip has to be seen to be believed- and just out side the famous San Gwann cartruts thank you very much.

As I frequent Triq il-Buqrajq quite often I can understand what Marisa Ford means. The situation in that particular street is quite different to that in the others seeing the road is more or less a private one and the skips were not located outside anyone's door but placed in one of the parking bays. That area has now become a real dump. The skips were a much cleaner and suitable alternative in this particular case which does not mean that it wasn't a good decision to remove them from the other streets.

Dear Ms. Ford, As I am also a resident of the same street, i must say that the problem does not lie with the lack of the skips, but in the fact that most of the residents are being totally irrisponsible and simply dumping their garbage whenever and wherever they feel like! People are taking out their black bags even on Tuesdays and Thursdays when these are the grey bag days! When we had the skips there were numerous occasions when a full skip would not deter people from dumping around it either. True, the skips were probably more convenient but if each individual acted more consciencously and left their bags just outside the main door of their block, there would be no mess at all. Also, any bulky stuff should be given to the bulky refuse collectors and not left in the street for weeks on end as happened recently. I would suggest to the council to step up warden patrols to look out for these infringments, maybe some day these selfish individuals will start to see the light.

San Gwann local council was a disaster from day 1 and still is.

I beg to differ. The skips were not only unsightly, they were also dirty and unhygienic. They would stink in summer, attracting insects, rats and cats. Nobody would want a skip to be sited just outside his door. Ever since the disappearance of the skips, our road ( Triq ir-Russett) is much cleaner and tidier.
Besides, a door to door collection, something our road had been deprived of for several years, is far more convenient.
I can also confirm that people from areas outside Kappara would dump their bulky refuse inside these skips. One greengrocer van owner would regularly fill the skips with his empty cardboard and wooden boxes. Residents would then have no option but to leave the garbage bags beside the skips, producing a mini rubbish dump in the process.
I therefore support the decisions taken by the present Council.
