Earlier this month I was in Malta again with my family consisting of my wife and 78-year-old mother-in- law.

We stayed as usual at Falcon Court apartments on Mazzola Street in Buġibba. At about eight one night we decided to walk up to one of the nearby restaurants. This is when the selfishness of some people came to light.

A couple of doors up from our accommodation, a kind owner of a garage had decided to put a concrete ramp halfway from the pavement to his front. This was in addition to another concrete ramp he had also put on the public highway onto the pavement.

This resulted in my elderly mother-in-law tripping on the ramp which was on the pavement and falling over, fracturing her shoulder in two places.

The rest is History, with a mad rush to Mater Dei Hospital and subsequent visits to the fracture clinic back in the UK.

This is a disgusting and obviously illegal thing to do. I am aware that I can sue the local council etc. and the garage owner but as a fellow Maltese I don't want to go down this road. In a few weeks' time I shall be returning to Malta for good and I plan to contact this kind garage owner personally to discuss this further.

In the meantime I sincerely hope that through this letter the message is passed on to others who have done the same thing, giving no thought whatsoever to other road users and in so doing putting people at risk and giving our country a bad name.
