The €2.5 million project being carried out on the 16th century Biagio Steps will transform the place into an interactive centre focusing on how Maltese fortifications were built, Resources Minister George Pullicino said this afternoon.

Speaking during a visit to the project, he said there was a strong need for an information centre that focused on one of the most important components of Maltese heritage – the fortifications.

This project, which the government hoped would be co-financed by the EU, complemented the restoration of six kilometres of bastions in Valletta, Vittoriosa, Mdina and Cittadella, which was also currently being undertaken at a cost of €36 million.

The purpose of the new centre would be to serve as a means for visitors to learn how the fortificatioons were built and used. There will be a special sectionf or children.

The project will see to the restoration of the building and the reconstruction of parts of it that have been damaged. A lift connecting the entrance in St Mark’s Street to Melita Street was also being built.
