Works being carried out at Cirkewwa are temporary
An artist's impression of the temporary facilities at Cirkewwa.
The works starting today at the Cirkewwa ferry terminal are of a temporary nature and are aimed at providing alternative and improved operational facilities in a new location during the building of the terminal, Malta Transport said.
The works include trenching and underground infrastructural works and services, roads, pavements and kerbs alteration works, line markings, barriers and signage, the provision of drainage facilities, mechanical and electrical works, and the rental of temporary passenger handling structure. There will also be a temporary police station and temporary public conveniences.
These temporary works should be completed by June.
A spokesman told timesofmalta.com that since the existing facilities at Cirkewwa were to be demolished as part of the project, the intention was to provide alternative facilities in one place which would not be changed until the project was completed in 2012.
Mepa issued a development permit for the building of the new terminal in December.

the question of a bridge between Malta and Gozo depends on the point of view. For us residing in Malta boarding the ferry is part of the fun as, in the main, we consider Gozo as our playground. For the Gozitans, however, coming to Malta very often is a must. A bridge would surely serve the Maltese well, as we could then harness the island of Comino, which to our shame is still a barren rock witness to our lack of imagination. I am sure that, if requested ELC can do wonders even by selecting a few depressions, filling them with some soil and planting indigenous trees. With a bridge, we can then dream of declaring Comino a national park! With our size and population, we can ill afford to waist one square mile of land which is, after all, the area of Comino. For all you doubters - some years back the 25th April bridge was opened in LISBON, Portugal. Built with the help of the European Union, it is, wait for it, l3km long (SAY the distance between Valletta and Rabat)!

To Mr. Fitzpatrick and Mr. Camilleri ...
Bridging to Gozo is no new idea - but the Fliegu is deep not allowing any intermediate peers.
Road bridges with kilometre long spans are not at all simple and so very expensive - they can't be justified to link a small community i.e. Malta to a tiny one i.e. Gozo.
Also the last time I checked, the Gozitans are doing just fine.
So lay it to rest and enjoy the new terminal. Even if there was the money, I'd hope the government can think of a better use for it than a bridge.

Its not a Cirkewwa terminal that is needed but a bridge!! With all the monies that the government has spent to build the 3 ferries, mgarr terminal and now the cirkewwa terminal we could have built 2 bridges and solved the problem for us poor gozitains who have to travel every day to work to Malta because Gonzi and the queen of Gozo did not provide us with opportunities to work in Gozo!! Its such a pity that no one hears the cry of us Gozitains who have to travel all the way home from work at Malta and suffer the ineffeciencies of the Gozo channel every day! Just because we are Gozitain no one cares to hear our cries and do something to help us live our live normally! Gozitains who suffer all the hastle and spend money to go decently to work at Malta by car or minibus everyday need the pity and charity of all Malta and the people and gov.. Maltese flatter that we do so much charity with unfortunate people in 3rd countries and forget that the poor gozitains need the pity and charity above all! TALK OF A BRIDGE GONZI!!

I hope the works, temporary or permanent, would have some sort of covering in the lanes to protect passengers in cars from the scorching Summer sun.

Cirkewwa Terminal started some 13 years ago. In less than that, the Japanese built Hiroshima and Nagasaki after the Atom Bomb.

I may have missed previous debate but has anyone considered a simple road bridge across from Malta to Comino, a road straight through the middle of Comino and another simple road bridge from Comino to Gozo?
Hey presto! Welcome to the 21st century! The severe weekly bottleneck to us getting home to Gozo every weekend is gone!
Malta is short of space; Comino land could then be freely developed and become a real attractive part of Malta.
How can it be paid for? Besides EU funds, Gozo Channel Ferry could be given the concession to run a toll system. I would willingly pay €5 toll each time to use it and cross over whenever I wanted. It would also be a lot cheaper than a new Terminal at Cirkewwa. In any case the ferry would probably still be preferred by tourists.
I wonder if the powers that be would just think about it?

Since the construction is in its primary stages, one might think about putting in a multi level parking garage or a level parking , like at the airport or Floriana with a shuttle or two running between the parking and the Terminal. Lots of room to put such parking between the hotel and the Osmosis Plant. Food for thought.

Back to the Future.
A whole novel stretching over some 10 years could be written regarding the Cirkewwa terminal. Planned. Started. Changed contractor. Changed planners. Changed architects. Demolishing it Starting again; these are the episodes of this novel or perhaps drama.
Main actors the prime ministers of the time EFA and Gonzi. Men behind the scene.Prompter
Pity the Royal theatre is not there where to perform this commedy of errors.
After all is this the right proposal or will there be further changes and alterations?

Headline from "The Times", one week before General Election 2013:
PRIME MINISTER INAUGURATES NEW CIRKEWWA TERMINAL
The Prime Minister, Lawrence Gonzi, last night inaugurated the new Terminal at Cirkewwa, which he c alled "state of the art". Dr Gonzi said that this is proof of government's committment to Gozo as eco-island. Later, at a PN activity part of the electoral campagin, Dr Gonzi roundly condemmed Opposition Leader Dr Muscat for "failing to say clearly where he stood regarding the Terminal".

@A.Azzopardi
Can you just remember when this "Cirkewwa Project" was first announced and posponed from year to year, even if tax money was always voted in every budget and nothing got done??

Whether they match or not, does not affect me much, doing the project on the other hand does. Mater Dei took eons to complete - who wants to go back to St. Lukes?
