MPs invited to take part in protest against increase in tariffs
The Ghaqda Unions Maltin has written to all members of Parliament inviting them to take part in the protest against the increase in the water and electricity tariffs, which is to be held in Valletta on Sunday.
In a letter it sent to each MP individually, the GhUM, formed between the Forum Unions Maltin and the General Workers' Union, the GhUM pointed out that a vote on the tariffs was to be taken in Parliament on Monday so the MPs' presence at the manifestation was of national importance and would be appreciated by constituents.

Some ppl blogging here never cease to amaze me! According to the PN ppl should not protest in the streets as they will probably scare away investment. Then if i am understanding this right they are trying to brainwash (or terrorize) the ppl that if they do protest it will be bad for Malta. Should we then let the Govt. trample over our democratic rights and trample over us? I don't think so!

Just leave ppl to protest. If you don't want to participate (like me)...don't. Everyone has the right to participate in protest( given they are according to the laws).
We're now Europeans...so act like them!
...as for the aftermath...well there's the parliament for deciding! It's in their hands ..on what to do.....I'll just act passively and won't care!

A good look at history will show you how its not always lucky to have oil in your country. I find it quite ironic how you mention our dependence on oil. Since I was a kid at school (over 15yrs ago) we were always told about certain issues such as alternative energy but it seems like education and practice don't have much in common. Can you explain to me how come so much little has been done during all this time? is that not bad administration (and i don't care if its PN or PL or whoever else that runs the country, as long as they do their job)?
Funny that you point out at Mr. Busuttil's article. Since I find a somewhat contradiction in the article. 1st he goes to say that it is not due to a deficit but then goes on to speak of a government being forced to take such an unpopular decision. Oh! and now Greece is being used as a scapegoat. I think Mr. Busuttil should be more concerned at how the EU unaccountable politicians and corruptions before pointing its finger at nations.

@C Zammit
Nobody is saying expecting his bills to be paid but you can't have sudden changes and costs burdened on society just like Gonzi did. If he has his reason for doing so then the least we expect is a VALID reason WHY such drastic measures had to be taking not poor excuses? That is downright irresponsible but can only be expected by the arrogance being show time after time by this administration. The only losers are the ones who fail to see how they are being fooled, or who blindly follow their leaders without questioning. It appears to me that you are one of them.

On Sunday you can move in Valletta as moderately and progressively as you like but:
• The world supply of oil will remain limited and continue falling
• Chinese, Indians and other ex (extremely) poor countries will continue improving their standard of living and consume oil that we used to buy cheaply in the past. This will continue to push up prices.
• The unions will not agree to redundancies at Enemalta so that you W&E bills will be lower
• Dr Joseph Muscat, Tony Zarb and la bella compagnia will not find a solution – unless they come up with an idea of more subsidies which means that you pay higher taxes to pay for your neighbour’s irresponsible consumption.
We are an oil dependent country.
We are not Kuwait.

Iva mela le, l-poplu ghandu kull dritt jipprotesta kemm irid u kemm joghogbu. Dan id-dritt gabu lura l-Partiti Nazzjonalista meta rebah l-elezzjoni ta' 87 ghax qabel l-anqas tiftah halqek ma stajt ghax kienu ituk xebgha. Minn meta l-poplu jista` iwaqqa` il-gvern ukoll? Il-poplu ghax sovran jista` ibiddel il-gvern meta tigi elezzjoni. Kien biss il-MLP li waqqa lilu nnifsu mill-gvern fin-98.
Tkunx int il-bahnan. Jekk bi protesta wahda jorhos iz-zejt u allura jorhsu t-tariffi tad-dawl u ilma, allura ejja naghmlu protesta kuljum. Izda din hija gimmick tal-gwu. Insejtuha l-protesta ta' "ISSA DAQSHEKK"? X'gid gabet lil Malta dik il-protesta ta' dak iz-zmien? XEJN.

I completely agree with you....although I would have put it in a more subtle manner. Protests and manifestations based on ignorance is their language, not ours. I wonder how the blog moderators let that one through.

@C.Zammit - And what exactly is it that you do for a living? How many people are in your family? Don't you enjoy the feeling that at least your input is being at least entertained - and that people are explaining things reasonably? Dr. Busutill explained it brilliantly in his article today, and I quite understand and agree with him; however, your screaming (using the caps) and insensitive use of vernacular do not win people over to either your opinion or that of your party (which you should be concerned about).

C Zammit fi you say people are wasting time that is because your government has reached its maximum arrogance. Nothing to boast about. You said 'This is the only way the goverment had to stop elecrticity wastage'. Are you joking? The government is the least person which can preach wastage control. Look at every project done by government: cost overruns, excessive time delays etc. Mater Dei is the prime example that comes to mind. And please do your homework correctly, the w&e tarriffs HAVE NOT RISEN SOLELY due to oil prices but mainly DUE TO INFINITE ENEMALTA INEFFICIENCIES, STATEGIC ERRORS IN THE PURCHASE OF OIL AND LACK OF INVESTMENT.

I would be very eager to attend this protest only if Zarb, Bencini and Muscat suggest to the govt from where he will pay the extra costs for th price of oil. Muscat has already declared officially that the price of electricity depends on the price of oil, therfore why is he going to the protest march. He only wants to be funny and support the Zarbs and co.

Can someone please tell us why the tariffs have increased??!!
Is it because if the price of oil?
Is it because of our deficit?
Or is it because of inefficiencies at Enemalta?

It's not what your mind thinks and what your heart feels. If you're a Government MP forget those things and just consider what Dr Gonzi thinks and feels. And then altogether say baaaaaaa, baaaaaaaa or meqqqq, meqqqq and off you go to your pens. Oh, to have a mind of your own or at least a social conscience! But rest assured most constituents are not the idiots you make them out to be.
