A warden and a learning support assistant (LSA) are under arrest following an incident this morning during which the latter was injured.

Different versions of the incident were given by the Malta Union of Teachers, the General Workers' Union and the Birkirkara Joint Committee of Local Councils.

The MUT said said the LSA was assaulted by a warden who entered Maria Regina Boys' Junior Lyceum in Fleur-de-Lys this morning.

It said the warden had entered the school to hand a ticket to the LSA. When the LSA asked the warden why he had issued the ticket, an argument broke out and the warden assaulted the LSA.

The LSA suffered bruises to the head as well as scratches to the head and an injury to an arm.

The MUT said it had been alleged that the LSA was also kicked while he was on the ground. It condemned the incident.

However, the GWU said it was informed that the warden reacted in self-defence when he was allegely hindered from carrying out his duties and attacked.

The union said that while it condemned all violence, those people who did not agree with decisions by the wardens could contest them in the proper quarters.

Raphael Carabott, on behalf of the Birkirkara Joint Committee said that the incident took place when the road where the school is located was closed to traffic.

The LSA was allegedly late and insisted with the warden that he should be allowed to drive into the no entry zone. The warden stopped him and refused his request. An argument ensued and the LSA allegedly pushed the warden's hand held computer from his hands.

He then allegedly drove in the direction of the warden but lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the school's yard, slightly injuring himself in the process. The police were called for assistance.

Mr Carabott also condemned the incident.
