Commissioner explains how Karin Grech murder was re-investigated
Karin Grech
Police Commissioner John Rizzo said today that the investigation into the parcel bomb which killed Karin Grech in 1977 was one of the biggest ever made by the Malta police, and the case remained open.
Giving evidence in court in a case instituted by the parents of 15-year-old Karin, who are seeking compensation from the government, Commissioner Rizzo said that in 1996 he was asked by then Commissioner George Grech to join the investigation team to re-examine all the evidence.
The process had taken three months during which they 'lived and breathed' the case, starting in the early morning every day and continuing into the night.
They had started from scratch and gone over every person involved in their previous investigation, as well as following new leads. He could not say how many people they had spoken to, but they included medical students.
He said that there was a doctors' strike at the time of the bombing, and there was a group of medical students who were abroad. The investigation followed them up but a number could not be traced.
While there were various suspects among the students, none had been singled out.
A lot of the students had nothing but praise for Karin's father, Prof Edwin Grech.
"There were new things we discovered from forensic evidence we sought from overseas laboratories as technology moved forward," Mr Rizzo said. They had examined fingerprints and DNA and the investigation was not closed.
"Even if a new lead is to become know today, I will look into it personally, Mr Rizzo said.
He said that when he became Commissioner he assigned an inspector specifically to investigate homicides, old and new. Since then they had solved between six and seven cases going back at least 20 years.
If this case was ever closed, he would be very happy, Mr Rizzo said.
He said that one of the lines of investigation was based on a similar bomb, placed outside the residence of Dr Paul Chetcuti Caruana in Mosta, which failed to go off.
They even investigated gynaecology patients of Prof Grech to see if there was some sort of connection, but nothing had resulted.
The case was put off to May for final submissions.

Eddie Fenech Adami used to say that when he will be in power he will say who killed Karin Grech and Raymond Caruana. He was in power between 1987 & 1996, 1998 & 2004 as Prime Minister and from 2004 til 2009 as President. Just to inform him that we are still waiting for the answers he has promised to us!

@ Police Commissioner, PN and PL
There is no doubt that Karen’s murder, Raymond’s murder and attempted murder of
Dr Paul Caruana Chetcuti were politically motivated:
Thus I suggest the following ( of course with the consent of all ):
To question ALL High Officials and Members of Parliament of both Political parties during those turbulent times and subject them ( many still alive)
and subject each one of them to a LYING DEDECTOR!
I suggest too that with the consent of both Leaders of both political parties
A number of set questions will be asked to all of the above.
I suggest too that while the above are undergoing this test both Leaders /their representative should be present.
I am sure and self convinced that the above will be a giant step to solve these
Political Murders.
Those who have nothing to hide will surely agree with the above.

J Borg i understand your point but please understand mine. All i can say is that i was informed by a Police Officer that the file was actually stolen from Commissioner Calleja`s office. Obviously i will never disclose the identity of the police officer in question, even under oath, so as to protect the identity of this person. However it could have been stolen by any one who had access at the Police Depot. The problem is finding out who had an interest for this file to go missing, even for perhaps a few hours. Funny things went on at that time, anke li l Kummissarju harablu l ghasfur ! I wonder how a blue and yellow parrot managed to break a glass pane, escape, and remain unhurt. Funny isnt it ?

Marcel Dingli: I do not accept that because Police Commissioneer Calleja is now dead we therefore cannot know whether Karin Grech's police case file was stolen or otherwise tampered with. Surely, commissioner Calleja would have ensured that such an event would be properly recorded and be accessible to today's investigators. This question has merit - the answer should be in the public domain.

Until the investigation is concluded / closed and the perpetrator identified, the Government cannot issue any form of compensation. This case is a farce. Only once the perpetrator is identified, the reason behind the Crime can be identified. At this stage, the reason can even be a ‘new’ one still not investigated.

J Scicluna unfortunately we cannot know 100%. Police Commissioner Alfred Calleja passed away. His funeral was held at Balluta Parish Church if i remember correctly.

@ L. Borg
Unfortunately it's not just doing one's duty that counts, but how you do it, when you do it and how successful you are at doing it. For example, if one does not have either the resources or the expertise to investigate a crime and fails to make timely use of expert outside help to solve it, then one could be guilty of not doing one's duty properly. I'm not saying this was the case, but with their limitations in resources and expertise, the local police always start with a great disadvantage.

@Mark Said
Of course the girl's parents are victims of a crime. They are victims of a crime which took away their daughter for ever.
Referring to Marcel Dingli's claim - yes I am very much interested whether this is true or not.

Here one must be suffering from some type of ignorance of the law! The fact is that today by right at law (Legal Notice 190 of 2007, promulgated on the 20th of July, 2007. The legal provisions thereof implement the provisions of Council Directive 2004/80/EC relating to compensation to crime victims.) one can make a formal application for compensation if one qualifies as a victim of crime according to law.

Profiling of people who do bombs or had access to explosive material might lead to better investigations than investigating patients and students.

Prof Edwin Grech is an honourable and respectable man. At least to me he is. He cured my mother from a severe back pain. Perhaps Mr Rizzo , the present Police Commissioner can tell us if there is any truth in the "rumour" that the Karin Grech file was stolen from the former Police Commissioner`s Alfred Calleja office.

"They even investigated gynaecology patients of Prof Grech to see if there was some sort of connection, but nothing had resulted". Therefore I do not understand why compensation is requested when the police investigations rightly went into other motive than politically. I wish that one day this cruel act will be solved but to give compensation is like saying that the police or the government at that time did not do their duty to solve this horrible crime. I am saying this with all respect to family Grech and which after all if it is granted all the people have to pay including myself.
