A total of 53 candidates have submitted their nomination for the election of administrative committees in eight hamlets.

The elections will be held on March 27. Elections for another six hamlets will be held later in the year.

The Nationalist Party in a statement said that 68 per cent of the candidates will contest under its ticket, confirming its commitment to the welfare of communities.

The PN will field 36 candidates, the PL will have 10 and there will be seven independents.

Sta Lucija, in Gozo, is the only hamlet where all the candidates are independents. The election there will not need to be held since the number of candidates equals the number of seats.

The PN recalled that it was a Nationalist government which set up local councils and had consistently shown its belief in subsidiarity.

The elections will be held at Kappara, Paceville, Madliena, Fleur-de-Lys, Bubaqra, Marsalforn and Xlendi.

The PN said it will field five candidates in Kappara to Labour's one. It will also have five candidates at Paceville to Labour's two.

In Madliena, the PN has six candidates and the PL has one, while at Fleur-de-Lys there are five PN candidates to Labour's one.

There will be four PN candidates, a PL candidate and an independent one in Bubaqra and seven PN candidates, two Labour ones and an independent in Marsalforn.

Five candidates have to elected in each locality.
