No permit yet for tariffs protest
The police have not yet issued the permit for next Sunday's protest against the water and electricity tariffs, The Sunday Times has learnt.
The protest is being organised by the Għaqda Unions Maltin along with the General Workers' Union and will be held in Valletta.
A police spokesman said although they had been notified, no permit had been issued. He did not specify whether an application for the permit had been submitted.
Sources close to the GWU said its officials were not unduly concerned since permits were usually issued close to the date of an event.
The Labour Party and Alternattiva Demokratika declared they would join the Għaqda Unions Maltin in the protest in Valletta on February 28.
The Confederation of Malta Trade Unions, which includes the Union Ħaddiema Magħqudin and the Medical Association of Malta, has already declared it will not be attending because it feels street protests cause more harm than good.
The Malta Union of Professional Psychologists, an affiliate of the CMTU, said while it would not participate as an organisation, since it shared the views of the CMTU, it was not stopping its members from attending. Meanwhile, the Malta Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise said it would not attend, while the Malta Employers Association said there were other options to taking to the streets in protest.
The Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association, which was the most vociferous of the social partners, is still undecided over whether to attend. This is possibly due to the fact that the association and the government are close to reaching agreement on measures to assist hotels and restaurants invest in alternative technologies to keep their water and electricity bills down.
Hotels and restaurants could benefit from schemes to finance investment in alternative energy as a means to cushion the hike in utility rates.
Rather than subsidise the impact directly, the government is working on special schemes to help hotels and restaurants invest in reducing their water and electricity consumption.

Although the government would help hotels and restaurants to invest in alternative energy sources they would still raise the prices and claim that prices have been raised because of the higher tariffs as imposed by the government. This is Malta unfortunately.

John Galea titbaqbaqx ghax jaghmillek id-deni. Fi zmien il-labour ma rajtekx tipprotesta kontra l-kontijiet tad-dawl u l-ilma meta l-prezz taz-zejt kien baxx u l-gvern tieghek bellalna kontijiet li kellu jkun gvern nazzjonalista li nehhihom kollha u gabhom normali. Issa meta l-prezz taz-zejt huwa gholi u hawn krizi internazzjonali u mhux kif jghidulek is-sidien tieghek,. il-kontijeit iridu jirrifletu l-prezz li l-Enemalta thallas u l-WSC ihallsu biex jaghtuna s-servizzi. Jekk inti trid li l-enemalta u l-WSC jkeccu lill-impjegati taghhom ghax skond il-FORUM u l-WGWU (li suppost tiddefendi lill-haddiema) hemm l-inefficjenza jiena naqbel mieghek u anke naqbel li nkeccuhom u nkun jien warajk li ntuhom daqqa ta' sieq il-barra.. According to "Torca" a 6 month bill for water and electricity rose by 50 Euros thats approx Euro 8.33 per month. which in old money means Lm3.76c.Now considering that you can c=save by using energy saving lamps and also with the subsidy for solar water heaters one can easily say that this protest is not about the increase in the tariffs but a political protest. What amazes me is not that the GWU is barking as per usual with Mr " issa daqsekk"trying to make a sound, but the teachers union.how can you of all people join hands with a union which in recent memory helped a goverement break your strike?

I have seen it-Torca today.
There is an article on the back page, wheras the bill of water and electricity for 6 months rose from app 86Euros to app 136Euros
I repeat 136Euros for 6 months water and electricity tariffs!!!!!!
What are we Maltese people pretending - for water and electricity to be free??
I REPEAT 136EUROS FOR 6 MONTHS!!!! - with the new tariffs!!
How cheaper can we go???
And we are protesting?

UHM you are not feeling the pulses of the people. You are betraying us your loyal members. I think that you are in full complicity with the governent regarding the utilities tarrifs. Shame you. You know very well that discussions lead to nowhere, bla, bla, bla, bla, and everything remains the same. UHM members join the protest, let's show this government that we are facing problems with the new tarrifs.

The Confederation of Malta Trade Unions (U.H.M., Medical Association of Malta...) the Malta Union of Professional Psychologists, Malta Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise, Malta Employers Association, Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association...
These Unions, Associations simply do not NEED to participate in the National Protest simply because they are regularly appeased by the authorities in one way or another. Their own interests are well and truly being seen to by the establishment for obvious reasons.
How can one expect them to join the protest? Firstly their members may not be paying the rent on properties which they may rent out from government. (Government is owed many Millions in unpaid rental fees - this has been officially acknowledged in Parliament); others may not be paying the National Security contributions - this has also been officially confirmed in Parliament.
Government is giving employers taxpayer money to bail them out of recesssion (and other) problems. They also get funds to expand their businesses.
Government has given doctors what must simply be considered as preferential remuneration packages - about which even the E.U. has negatively commented.
Considering all this....does any workman, employee out there really expect these people to back the National protest next week?

What nonsense.
The Looney Left are coming up with incredible conspiracy theories nearly every day. Now they are trying to imply that people don’t have a right to hold public protests.
If an application is made to hold a public protest, this will obviously be granted.

gejtu & co. there's no need to come for the protest. you have to stay 'forcina' to gonzipn or else it might fall. but your members will be there with full force because they are also hit with the high electricity & water tariffs which is making them suffer to live a normal decent life.

Are you comparing our Dear Leader to Mao? With all the crap that followed, at least Mao's intention was to move China forward. What's happening here is more like North Korea were the few in the Inner Circle will enjoy wealth untold while the rest of us die hungry.

This country, in spite of appearances to the contrary, is a democracy and thus, you do not need to apply for a permit to organize a demonstration. What the law lays down (vide section 3 of Cap. 68) is that the organizers have to inform the Police Commissioner not earlier than 8 days (that is, yesterday) and not later than 48 hours prior to the event.
The Police Commissioner can only order that the meeting or demonstration takes place in a different venue or in a different village, if there is a another public function or feast in that village but he does not permit or withhold the permit for a meeting or demonstration.

Mao's largest crime is the Great Leap Forward, a bungled attempt to restructure the economy of China which created a famine that killed some 30 million.

What is this about? Why such a known protest is being witheld permit? Is this a dictatorship or a democracy? Need the people explain loudly to Gonzo and clique that historically people the world over have taken many 'beatings' and let downs by their leaders but when (a) their livlihood and/or (b) their food was messed with people made their voice heard in different ways.
