I could not believe I won - Thea Garrett
Video: Mark Zammit Cordina
Young singer Thea Garrett had to watch a recording of yesterday’s Malta EuroSong contest to believe that she had actually won it.
“Although this had been my dream, I could not believe I won,” she said yesterday.
A first time contender, Thea, 17, obtained the highest points both from the judges and the voting public for the song My Dream, composed by Jason Cassar and penned by Sunny Aquilina.
Speaking to timesofmalta.com while preparing for a television programme this afternoon, Thea said this she had been dreaming about taking part in the Eurovision for years and when she was 14, Mr Cassar promised he would compose a song for her in a few years.
He kept his word and when she was 16 started working on a song with her. After a brief interlude last year when Thea took part in the Voice of Tomorrow competition in London, Thea and Jason spent the past year perfecting My Dream.
Yesterday, they started planning a song for next year's contest. Little did they know that in a few hours' time Thea would be winning this year's.
Both Thea and Jason were satisfied with the result and they would not like the song to be changed for the Eurovision.
A keen Eurovision fan who has been recording the contest since 1997, Thea says that she is inspired by Sara Brightman and Whitney Houston.

Winter Moods? Have you ever heard high school bands in the UK, USA, France or Germany? Winter Moods could have made it had they had a proper producer giving their stuff a polish.

Another lousy ballad once again!!!
Any people with skilled ears will notice that the verses are a pale version of "Can you Feel The Love Tonight" and the arrangements are absolutely rubbish and badly produced. The drum parts are basic and could have been played by a 10 year old who's just started playing drums.

@ P Debono: ( your quote ) Follow in the footsteps of Kevin Borg and leave this country if you want to be successful. Please will you be more precise in your comment, and give a suitable reason ?

I have known Thea since she was a kid and singing has always been her passion. After quite some years, I saw Thea again, now a teenager living up to her dream. Her performance was stunning, more like a pro than a newcomer. With low expectations yet with determination, Thea put in a great performance. Whether we have a winning formula for the Eurovision or not, doesn't really matter at all. Really and truly, we have come to accept the farce the Eurovision voting system holds. So Thea, enjoy this moment and rest assured we'll be proud of you at the Eurovision wherever you place. We've placed 2nd and last, anything in between is good, anything better, and we'll add another national holiday ! Good luck and wish you and your family all the best ! I'm sure you made your family proud!

If it were for me, I would have picked Dario Bezzina and his exciting piece "Grave Dancers". I would also be hunting for some good dancers and work hard for an effective choreography to support Dario deliver the piece to a Eurovision audience who would have surely liked his song and his peculiar --almost eccentric, and definitely spooky-- way of delivering it. A great pity.
But the moment now belongs to Thea Garrett, and everyone should give her their support. Just a note of caution. Please be reminded of Albania's disaster last year. Albania had both a very good singer and a very good song, but they used a concept which badly backfired, and Thea's white bird reminded of it.
I feel very sorry for Claudia Faniello. This year her song was only average, but she had exceptional songs both last year and the year before, especially the year before --"Sunrise". I have had that song bookmarked now for quite some time, probably more than a year. The work on the piano, and the way the singer relates to it are particularly good. That song would also have attracted an interesting choreography.
Overall, well done everyone.

First of all, Well done Thea!
Secondly @ E. Muscat: If you found the seagull 'tal-biki' & you prefer 'darker clothes', that is your own opinion and it doesn't necessarily mean that the seagull & the dress weren't fine. I believe Thea was original & I congratulate her for her performance.
I really wish that people would leave maltese singers free to present Malta without over-burdening them with too much criticism about what they should do and should not do. Let's take the Eurovision with the right light hearted approach & enjoy the eurovision adventure as a pleasant, cultural, leisure experience. I appeal to who ever is reading this to refrain from putting singers under stress before & after each eurovision like it has been done in the past years.
Wish you all the best Thea!

I say who is the Bird Man following her like a bird of prey, this creature in feathers reminds me verynmuch of that Film i was watched called: The Eagle Has landed, get rid of him or blast him off the stage. migt help the public to focus only on the singer putting us all to sleep with the usual Ballads th Maltese can come up with year in year out, liven it up, but this is a big let down yet again for Malta, apart from all this let your hair down enjoy yourselves and have a nice time. GoodBye.
