Meet Thea Garrett

Eighteen-year old Thea Garrett, the winner of the Go Malta Eurosong contest, was inspired to start singing at the age of five after watching a group of singers.

She copied them and what came out of her mouth mesmerised her mother who started taking her to music lessons.

Last year, Thea made the first big stride in her singing career when she performed on the opening nights of Gigi D'Alessio's tour in Rome after having been selected by a panel of judges including Gigi himself.

Her performance and that of another Maltese singer, Christabelle Borg, were the best from the 19 finalists participating.

Thea performed Apri le braccia. Gigi had asked Thea to try the song in a different key while he accompanied her on the piano.

The idea to complete for a place on Gigi’s tour had come from former Maltasong chairman Grace Borg. Ms Borg had handed a CD of popular music sang by Thea and Christabelle to the Italian singer’s management company, who suggested the two take part in the competition.

Thea had told The Times in October that winning the competition would bring her closer to her dream of performing in public at London’s West End.

She may have to wait to realise it, since she now has to start the preparations for her performance in Norway.
