Pamela Crawford (The Sunday Times, February 14) wrote about a meeting held to support a mini-council for Burmarrad. For many years I have constantly campaigned and will carry on doing so for Qawra and Buġibba to have their own council separate from St Paul's Bay.

I think that I am one of those the writer was referring to; however, I can confirm that I was not aware of this meeting and so did not attend. The reason for this could be that my work takes me away from the island a few days at a time and at very short notice. Having said that, I still believe that the 7,500-odd registered residents of Qawra and Buġibba fully deserve their own local council if, for nothing else, than to deal with the dereliction that has blighted our area and this once thriving seaside resort.

I have made my views known often enough to our MPs who, I believe, sympathise with our plight, but are at a loss as how to go about it without upsetting their party's strategies.

I was disappointed to learn that the government has decided to grant a mini council for the 800 or so residents of Burmarrad but, to date, ignored the 7,500 residents of Qawra and Buġibba.

The only upside to this is that I am one of those 20,000 floating voters and at the next general election my vote and that of the other floaters residing in the area will go a long way.
