Updated: Costa Rican charged with importing cocaine
A 32-year-old man from Costa Rica this morning pleaded not guilty to conspiring to traffic and importing cocaine and with having the drug in his possession in circumstances which denoted it was not for his exclusive use.
Luis Fernando Penanaranda Soto arrived in Malta late on Wednesday.
The police said earlier today that a medical test established that the Costa Rican was carrying a large amount of capsules, each containing 10 grammes of cocaine, in his stomach.
The court heard that Mr Soto has already passed 35 capsules but there were more capsules in his stomach. From court, Mr Soto was taken straight to hospital.
Duty Magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna is leading an inquiry.

Will he be collecting the capsules himself or will somebody else be doing that job? If some one else will be doing it then he/she has my admiration, and I say I have a shitty job!

Since Malta became a member of the European community work practises in Customs had to change to conform with E.U. legislation. They can no longer stop passengers arriving from E.U. countries for duty purposes. On the other hand they target specific passengers for drugs, firearms and pornography importation against an established criteria set out by the E.U. Dogs do help in drug detection, but it is the painstaking and tedious job of collecting intelligence that sometimes produce results. Close collaboration with the Police Anti-Drug Squad has increased drug seizures.

"When I consider the possibility of either one of those capsules bursting in the stomach gives me the creeps........!!!"
The pity is that they don't because they are destroying our citizens.

Mr Azzoparti
I do not think that dogs would sniff capsules inside someone's stomach.

May this man be charged accordingly.
A very well done to all those involved in preventing this coccaine from reaching its final destination.
Interesting, Costa Rica, a nation world famous for its coffee bean industry !!!

Costa Rican in Malta from the other side of the Pacific. Malta must be a big drug hub. What are we doing to control these drugs. Such a small place and it's filled with drugs. What ashame to allow so many drugs into our country. I am not surprised at all. today, anyone can come into Malta because there are rarely and searches for incoming passengers. I am shocked at this method. Customs searches no one. Cannot one realize that this is the problem. Shame on whoever invented this method of not searching incoming drugs or having sniffing dogs around.
