700 dogs neutered in four months
A record number of 700 dogs have been neutered and chipped in four months by Dogs Trust Malta and the SPCA, since the launch of the free neutering and microchipping offer.
The campaign was aimed at spreading the word of responsible dog ownership across the island and promoting neutering as the answer to Malta’s unwanted puppies problem.
Success has also been achieved through Dogs Trust’s free educational workshops held in 350 schools, introducing around 7,000 future dog owners to the challenges and rewards of owning a dog.
With each dog capable of producing a litter of up to 13 pups, this initiative has helped prevent a potential 9,100 unwanted puppies – therefore helping to tackle the issue of stray dogs in Malta. The campaign has also helped pet dogs by reducing the risk of cancer and encouraging calmer behaviour.
To encourage owners to neuter their dogs, the offer also included a free microchip to help owners reunite with their dogs should they get lost - and a head-to-paw healthcheck including vaccinations, de-worming and flea treatment.
Dogs Trust Malta campaigns manager Sarah De Cesare said:
“We’ve had an overwhelming response to our campaign and it looks like dog owners across the island are embracing the idea that neutering and microchipping are part and parcel of being a responsible dog owner. People of all walks of life have registered their dogs, all with the common goal of giving their dogs a happy and healthier life.”
The charities have chosen International Spay Day, February 23, to roll out the second phase of their nationwide free neutering and microchipping campaign, whereby owners receiving benefits could have their dogs neutered and microchipped for free. Up to five dogs per household, factory, farm and business can take advantage of this offer.
Other residents may also take advantage of low cost neutering and microchipping by calling the Dogs Trust team on 7771 1100 to discuss eligibility.
Dogs Trust will also be holding roadshows in selected locations around the island offering free healthchecks (including neutering, microchipping, vaccinations, worming and flea treatment) for a limited time only, to all residents regardless of their financial situation.

Chipping animals? Well this area is hounded with ill intent, whether conscious of it, or not.
Some 10% of dogs get cancers with these chips and may get hypersensivity towards these chips.
Un-noted perhaps to the politicians who have made these laws, is the elite agenda of chipping even humans. This is happening now too. Most if not all staff at Mexico's Attorney General's Office are chipped.
Some US companies were so aggressive into forcing humans being chipping that some states prohibited the compulsive use of human chipping into their companies.
If you think that this is far fetched, think again.
Animal chipping is to condition humans to think it as normal, when one day hits our own skin!
Forcing animal owners to chip them to contain stray dogs is nonsensical, as strays do not have "regular" owners, and so the brunt is borne by owners, who usually take care of them. Another draconian measure!

@ W Spencer
to say that i take my anger out on the animals means that you really dont have any idea who i am! i have some 9 cats at home, a dog, and several chickens and rabbits. i would keep more animals than that but i dont have the space. i wouldnt have got in contact with SPCA in the first place if i didnt care about my pets. but how can the people at SPCA answer back in such a hatred language to my request for their help?! all this because one of my 9 cats got pregnant! does this mean that i dont care about my pets?! ok, so your idea is to lock them in cages all day and have absolutely no contact with other animals. Still, i wont donate money to SPCA, thats a promise.

@ Ron Saliba.....In my days, coming from the slums of Valletta, we did not have T.V., computers, video games. Our source of playing was either pizzi, pizzi kanna, or playing with stray animals, which then always finish sleeping with one of us,even for a night. Our challenge was, that who will have the courage to make a dog sleeps with him without his parents notice will win the bet. At the end, we never had any problems because our parents accept our friends, and you can hardly seen a dog outside. With cats was a different story, because cats are more independent. But we never done cruelty. Today is different, I know that there are many boys and girls that love animals, and that is very positive. I wish that the authorities can do spot checks on farms, because many farmers, without knowing are doing cruelty to dogs, by let them out on roofs, and fields, tight up with a very restricted ropes.

@ J Bajada
I imagine that the cruelty and abuse to animals that the volunteers at SPCA see everyday, does make them suspicious and angry. But, unless you personally spend lots of your time helping such animals, you are not really in a position to critisise those people who are doing something to help the poor animals.
To say that you would never donate a cent to the SPCA, just because you did not like the way someone spoke to you, is pathetic. It says a lot about you, that you take your anger out on the animals !!!

I will say this from my very own experience...SPCA should learn to treat human beings in the same way they treat their animals. When something genuinely wrong has happened to someone's pets and it is obvious that its not the owner's fault, SPCA end up insulting these persons in a manner that people do not even think of doing to their pets at home!...i will never donate money to SPCA.

@ Mr Micallef...owning a dog / cat ...and having one as a pet are two different things. Having a pet is making it one of the Family., caring for it...dogs / cats, that are left out on the roof, or in the garage, or roaming the streets un-neutered, are not pets, just a menace and a nuisance !!!

@g.c.Forte Your comment is completely selfish. Not neutering so the children can play with them for maybe a couple of hours and than leave them cold at night is just plain stupid thinking. Maybe you should visit an animal sanctuary and you can hear the stories these dogs passed before they were picked up from the streets. Life from when you were young to now has changed and it has to be accepted. Suffice to say that you hardly see any kids playing outside today let alone playing with strays! @all Neutering is part of a process that has great benefits for the dog. Perhaps anyone who has no idea why, can easily search the net and find out what they are.

@ Hold your brakes................do not neuter every dog and cat you see. We want our children to see and know what a stray dog and cat looks like. I remember in my time, when I was young it was part of our life to play with these lovely four legged friends. Today you hardly see youngsters care about them.It is a pity.

Well done to the Dogs trust and Spca. l would like to point out that we at Stray Animal Support Group neutered 1,400 cats last year, with funds raised in our two charity shops. l know people do not always agree with neutering but it something that has to be done or the island would be overrun with stray cats. Please keep supporting our shops in Qawra and San Gwann. We are holding a sponsored walk on sunday from the Gillieru hotel to Fra Ben and back .Please feel free to join us starting at 10am. Thanks.
