Two nightclub bouncers were yesterday charged with the attempted murder of two Italian men in the early hours of Valentine's Day.

Stephen Catania, 41, of San Ġwann and Bernard Briffa, 25, of Valletta, were also accused of working as private guards without a licence and seriously injuring, Luca Di Mauro, 27, and Riccardo Miano, 35.

They pleaded not guilty.

The incident allegedly started when the bouncers asked the two men to leave Clique night club, in St George's Road, Paceville, at about 4.30 a.m.

The two Italians were taken to hospital where a doctor certified that they were suffering from serious injuries, including broken noses and ribs.

When the court registrar asked for the particulars, Mr Catania, who is well built, said he was a security guard and Mr Briffa said he worked in customer care.

Defence lawyers Gianella Caruana Curran, Josè Herrera, Steve Tonna Lowell and Veronique Dalli said they would not be asking for bail at this stage.

Magistrate Antonio Mizzi remanded both men in custody.

Police Inspectors Trevor Micallef and Nikolai Sant prosecuted.
