Welcome Lydia Abela
The unexpected nomination of Lydia Abela as Labour's executive secretary, a post given birth by the one and only Joseph Muscat, is a confirmation of how highly Dr Muscat thinks of the female gender in the political arena.
Even though Dr Abela appeared literally out of nowhere, I have no doubt that it was a wise and ingenious decision on the part of the Leader of the Opposition.
Since Women's Day, on March 8, is less than a month away, I feel I want to congratulate him on his tremendous choice.
Placing a woman in this post must surely be a part of Labour's plan to strengthen the party.
I have no doubt whatsoever that the President's daughter-in-law will not let others down but will live entirely up to expectations.
She will do us proud not because she is a woman, not because Dr Muscat has complete and utter faith in her capabilities hence her new post, but because she has the necessary qualifications to be a magnificent inspiration to other women who are thinking along the lines of entering the political field.
It is indeed a rare quality that women like Dr Abela have drive, motivation, ambition and a strong conception of what other women think and feel.

@ Anthony Mizzi: Sir, if you consider me 'a Gonzipn apologist', then, you are either of sub-zero intelligence or else you do not frequently read my missives. It is a pity that people are jealous of the characteristic that I have of being factual and apolitical - a characteristic which is extremely rare in this divided and angry young country of ours.

With comments like these Gonzipn apologists, Dr. Lydia Abela must surely be feeling most welcome, at home and convinced of having made the right choice and certainly be enthusiastic at the role of LP Executive Secretary ,entrusted to her.
Welcome on board.

I think the time is now ripe......a Republican Party need to be established........The PL never picked up the traditional torch of liberty............The PL simply aspire to take over the harp from the PN....and try to play the same tune as Nationalist did these last 25years.....
UNFORTUNATELY BY NATURE THE PL's FINGERS ARE TO THICK to pluck gracefully a harp.....only the sophists Nationalists can do the harping.......drums would have been a better instrument to play, for the PL...as is simple and cynic.
We Republicans do not want any monarchy to run our country.........We Republicans do not give a dam if the president has a mistress or if he/she is gay....or if he is a voodoo doctor.....As long as his/her loyalty to our beloved Republic comes first.....before his creed or family.

@ Mr Navarro: Sir, I am never ambiguous. What I mean to say is that previous Presidents, such as Fenech Adami, Demarco and Buttigieg (RIP), already had relatives in politics when they became President.
President Abela did not have relatives in politics and he should have had the good sense of keeping it that way. In other words, yes, Dr Lydia should not have become Secretary of the PL during the tenure of office of her father-in-law. That is my view. And by the way, it is not a question of 'questioning the integrity of the head of state'. It is a question of what is best. A question of 'kif isiru l-affarijiet'! Serjeta! That's what. And it's not a question of 'conflict of interest', either.
Mr Navarro, I don't know how old you are, so I don't know what life-experience you have. But I have come to believe that it is difficult, very difficult, for a person to grasp the respect of the multitude! Especially in Malta.

@ Valerie Borg
"I have no doubt that it was a wise and ingenious decision on the part of the Leader of the Opposition". Oh yes. That's right, if only one could forget how Joseph's team made sure that George Abela did not take the reins of the party!
It's more like brown-nosing and trying to get on the good side of the President! Franco Farrugia hit the nail on the head and one has to agree with his fair comments.

I just cannot see the need for the writer Valerie to mention the fact that Dr Abela is related to the President, she has got her new role through her own capabilities. The comment by Franco is somewhat ambiguous would he have expected the President to block his relative from taking the position, I do not think that anyone can question the integrity of our Head of State. In such a small island there is always going to be situation similar to this, I cannot see a conflict of interest.

@ Valerie Borg: I would not have had anything to criticise with your letter, had it not been for the fact that you describe Dr Abela as 'The President's daughter-in-law'. Now, what I have to say about the matter, I will say now:
We previously had Presidents of the Republic who had relatives in politics. The Presidents themselves came from the political scenario.
But this time, we have a President of the Republic who did not - repeat, not! - have any relatives in politics and he should have had the good sense of keeping it that way! This does not augur well to the President-of-everyone as he describes himself to be and as he has been described over and over again.
