Two Maltese prepare for gruelling desert run
Two Maltese, Nathan Farrugia and Douglas Barbaro Sant are to take part in a marathon across the Sahara desert in aid of charity.
They will be taking part in the 25th Marathon des Sables (MDS), running 250 km over six days across the Moroccan desert. Their aim is to raise €30,000 in aid of Inspire Foundation and Facing Africa, a UK charity which helps people suffering from Noma, an acute infection which affects the faces of its victims. Nathan Farrugia is CEO of Inspire.
Nathan and Douglas have worked together in the past on charity challenges, raising hundreds of thousands of euros and pounds for Maltese and UK charities.
There will be a total of 750 participants in the run.
The marathon will take place in April and participants can expect uneven rocky ground and sand dunes, with temperatures reaching 52 degrees. They will have to carry everything they need for the race on their backs.
The MDS Malta team is seeking sponsors to help it reach its financial aims.

Gruelling run? Try the toughest foot race on earth. Well done chaps, keep the spirits high and the backpacks loaded. The MdS certainly divides the doers from the posers, you're certainly doers.

I wonder how some people manage to see only negative even in a positive initiative like this. Some comments below are stupid to say the least.
Good luck guys!

Dear Mr./Ms Buhagiar, suggest you chose your words carefully before you comment on future charity activities and further insinuating that funds raised may be used to cover participation fees. This marathon is no holiday, this marathon is actually the toughest marathon organized on the planet and requires all one's free time in order to come close to getting into shape for such an activity. Both participants have been involved in charity events all their life and therefore comments such as yours are not appreciated. To even think that way is worrying let alone going public. It would be good to know what charitable events you were involved in and if you were one would worry where the funds went with that train of thought of yours.
I truly and sincerely wish Nathan and Douglas the very best of luck, i am sure that like in the past, will make us proud with their achievements.

Good Luck to both of you! My wife supports all of my running adventures ... but she draws the line at marathons - so any ultras like the Marathon des Sables (marathon of sands) is out so I'm jealous (apart from the incredible registration fees and personal cost). All the best and good luck for your wonderful causes!

these chaps need to pull their socks up to gather funds as according to the following link they are way behind?http://www.facingafrica.org/FA08/content/site/en/pages/fundraisers/default.asp
how much of local contributions will go to Inspire or to cover the guaranteed minimum required to participate

The landscape scene at the begining of the video is actually situated in the state of Utah, USA and not the sahara desert.
Best of luck to both of you for such a demanding marathon!

Great initiative, Nathan and Douglas! (and great promotional video)
Irony of the situation is that while you will be longing for some cool we'll be dreaming of some of the heat you will be experiencing in your challenge.
Wishing you both the best of luck.

I'm Nathan's wife and I can assure you all that both Nathan and Douglas, are committed to giving their 100% in this race and for the causes they are raising funds for and believe in. If you see a couple of nutters running for hours on end, with heavy back packs and clumpy shoes, it's them :)
Both are also committed to raising as many funds as possible for INSPIRE (the Eden and Razzett Foundation) and NOMA, a condition that affects mainly children under the age of 6 in Africa. Look it up, it's horrific..... should you wish to make a donation, however large or small, you may log onto the link below. We're behind you Nathan and Douglas!
