Migrant jailed for detention centre escape
Hasan Ramadan, an Iraqi migrant, was jailed for seven months today for escaping from Safi Detention Centre and trying to leave Malta.
In handing down sentence, the court noted that the accused had not cooperated with the police.

@anthea doughty: i happen to see beyond the mere absence of a visa - if you come from a war-torn, disease ridden african country, then you would qualify for asylum and thus no longer be illegal. however, i do not think this is the case in your situation.

@sean grima - you love the illegal immigrants don't you? I would love to live in Malta - think I will get away with arriving illegally, with no funds, no income, no means of earning an income and be allowed to stay? Even better to be arresteed if I try to leave? Oh and my reason for claiming asylum? To escape the intolerable situation in my homeland - namely taken over by immigrants?

HASAN RAMADAM is'nt an IRAQI and HR isn't his real name. This person been the past five years in LIBYA and he is a Kurdish The U.K. eased the entry of IRAQI's subject they can prove their nationality through the IRAQ embassy.

Sometimes I think that these are "detention" centres only in name . We have the army out in force checking carnival revellers for the occasional hashish joint when they could be better employed securing these come as you please centres. Somebody has got his priorities wrong.

The punishment should not be jail but immediate expulsion to their own country.
