Anthony Mifsud in fresh call for compensation
Former prison warder Anthony Mifsud has file a judicial letter in the First Hall of the Civil Court against the Commissioner of Police saying he has still not been paid compensation of €186,349 ordered by the courts after he suffered torture while under arrest.
In 1983, Mr Mifsud was wrongly accused of helping two prisoners escape and was forced, at gunpoint, to sign an admission of guilt, causing him to spend three years in prison for nothing.
Mr Mifsud said in today's application that he had still not been paid compensation despite the amount having been confirmed by the Constitutional Court in September last year. He said he is also owed €19,319 in interest and called on the commissioner to settle the issue within a week.

Raymond Caruana was an ordinary citizen. A humble human being, a twin brother to his sister Rita, the youngest from a family of 12. I remember his voice as if it was yesterday. The way he used to walk. The times when me, as a young teenager used to meet him when my brother used to take me at their Gudja residence. I remember also those big family gatherings they used to have, even on Saturday evenings. I remember him oneday coming to our Birzebugia Flat to offer some prickly pears to my mother. His father had a field in Gudja. He had a girlfriend and was preparing to get married. The Gudja Parish priest of that time wanted him to be "Sankristan" of the parish. Fr. Caruana who was at that time serving in the Gudja parish, used to teach me Religious studies at college.
People are clever and politically critical. Its good that people do that. That tragic event hit me close and it shaped me too. I have my own understanding to the whole political scenario of that time.
I apologise, Mr. Anthony Mifsud, this is your news here not Raymond's.
May those times never repeat themselves.

Before you do go into a trance, you should address your request to those persons who invoke his name whenever an election is approaching. Then if you REALLY want enlightenment you could also ask a very ex-prominent person who had declared publicly that he knew who the murderers were, indicating three persons by name...

As regards the Raymond Caruana story one must remember that Pietru Pawl Busuttil who was falsely accused of having murdered him received a huge sum of money as compensation for having been arrested for a few days. Most of which he spent in hospital.
But then again, unlike Anthony Mifsud, Pietru Pawl Busuttil is the nationalist Mayor of Safi and unlike other nationalist mayors he does not speak out about things like ODZ buildings.

For a kind of case that was involving a Government Department, the payment must have been given to this man by the governent ,and than the Government with all his entities that are much powerful in legistlations can react for the refund from the ex commissioner that was responsable for this issue.

For how long will this story go on? What is the government waiting for before paying the man what by right is his? In my opinion this is real injustice I really would like to know what if this have happened to some relative of any minister... I am really fed up of this treatment.

Dear Mr Mifsud and fellow readers,
Dont you find it surprisingly fantastic that this man allowed the present government to use his story to claim sympathy and claim violence and yet they have used him and abused his story . Same old government , PN be honest and tell the readers that you are a farce government . You talk about catholic values , and yet you are ridiculing this man by begging for his money .What had you promised him when you had convinced him to give you his story . We will soon start hearing about Raymond Caruana soon again , as that is the need of the present government , but us young ones dont care anymore . You never prosecuted anyone on the matter . But you will use it at your own use !! What a farce .

This country continues to fascinate me. If I do recall correctly, Dom got compensated for his property in the delimara only a couple of years after he instituted his case, whilst this poor chap almost 20 years later hasn't gotten a single penny for a far worse faith than the loss of one's property. wheres justice and due process? this situation reminds me of an interesting quote from george orwell - all animals are equal but some are more equal than others

If any one of us lesser mortals were to default on payment of taxes we get charged interest and fines and so on, while the government just flips us the finger and gets away with anything.
This continued breach of this man's human rights makes the current government no better than past ones.

Why not pay the man? The minister of justice is busy banning toy guns, that is why. Owning a plastic water pistol is a horrendous crime but torturing a man and ruining his life and that of his family can wait.....
Oh even rights of people being interrogated by the police can wait as long as the minister pushes through legislation that makes it a criminal offence to drive trough a red traffic light.
This is not coming from a PL man. I am from the minister's constituency and a simple check in the PN's database will reveal my voting pattern. But not any more minister unless you change your priorities.

PAY UP NOW! What a SHAME. It's only the equivalent of 2 buses, after all............for a ruined and broken man who had to spend years and years waiting for justice.

For crying out loud pay the man. Whether is the Commissioner or the Goverment it does not make any difference, after all it is coming out of our taxes. Government and the Commissioner of Police ought to be ashamed of themselves. A 27 year pld saga with no ending. Shame.
