Gnr Psaila's parents want answers, one year on

One year after Gunner Matthew Psaila died during a military exercise in Chadwick Lakes, his parents, Marion and Twanny, are still trying to come to terms with what happened.

Because of what happened and the ensuing court proceedings, Matthew's comrades have been reluctant to share their experience, but the family yearn to learn more about his last hours.

Mrs Psaila says: "There are times when in my mind I walk with Matthew through his last moments, wading through the water, but then I get to the bridge and I stop there - that's the missing link of the puzzle."

Her husband adds: "Nobody is going to bring Matthew back. What we want is that justice is done with Matthew; justice that Matthew didn't die in a ‘misadventure'."

The 19-year-old gunner died after finding himself underwater during army training on February 13, 2009 - a bitterly cold day. This exercise, with the army's C (Special Duties) Company, would have seen the soldiers qualify for the BIII infantry course.

In an interview with Ariadne Massa on the first anniversary from his death, Matthew's parents speak about how the clock stopped ticking and "nothing can ever be the same again".
