Musumeci, Micallef, submit casual election nominations
Robert Musumeci and Peter Micallef.
Nationalist candidates Robert Musumeci and Peter Micallef this morning submitted their nomination to contest the casual election to fill John Dalli's old seat in parliament.
The casual election will be held on Thursday.
Speaker Louis Galea's nomination to the European Court of Auditors has left Mr Musumeci and Dr Micallef as the only ones with a chance to take the seat, from the sixth electoral division.
Mr Musumeci is the Mayor of Siggiewi while Dr Micallef is a member of Zebbug local council.

To Robert Musumeci ...Please continue to exercise your right to participate in the election. I don't know you personally, but i have seen you in political programs and you are an honest man. Shame on the bloggers. Don't pay attention to them.

The LP is taking the resemblance of a junkyard accepting bits and pieces hoping that the rejects may be recycled ?
Don’t we remember EFA embracing a former criminal, who was rejected by the MLP, during a PN mass meeting , and boasting that the PN was proud to welcome anybody on board?

The Pn may seem to be broken in bits....but this is mostly nothing more than the labour hopeful spin. History has showed that the more the PN is punched, (even from within) the stronger it gets, contrary to labour: the more it is chipped the more it breaks....The PN backbench is strong and proactive. A new Labour Leader had only the wits to ride over the actions of the pn backbench...as we say in malta, "rikeb biss kukkuzejt fuq franco, jeffrey and others".... Dr Muscat has no parlamentary mettle....The PN backbench with the front bench has shown itself to be stronger than the opposition in all this....PN is and remains serious in its business. Franco, Jeffry, Jesmond ... we all know that for them the people and the PN remains their only focus.....and are admired only for that, even if labour remain hopeful....Jeffry u jesmond, ...prova jkissirkom il-labour, tpaxxuhomx.....ghax qed jinqdew bikom...

I understand your joy, given that you have now resigned to the fact that unless you have a Trojan horse your party is unelectable. With the lack of substance so far, if an election is not held soon, the PL or LP or the Progressive and Moderates Movement is risking the impossible, that, is loosing the next general election of 2013!

We, Siggiewi residents, are shocked by the way our Mayor has been visciously attacked. It is not right to delve into the personal lives of politicians. Musumeci is one of the most capable architects with a very busy office. Surely, he does not need a seat in Parliament to earn his livelihood. He has always been loyal to the NP. He is friendly with everyone in Siggiewi - not least Labour people who adore him. I am pale blue and will remain to vote Natioanlists. I vote Robert because he is not an arch conservative. Good Luck Rob.

Funny how all the LP supporters are 'rooting' for Musumeci, hoping (or rather dreaming) that he will topple the government! It is even funnier listening to the PL saying that John Dalli was 'one of the better ministers', when everyone knows how the state of the economy is at the moment. But the most funny thing one can see is the labourites sucking up to JPO after what they had said against him pre-election.
Oh well.. Only in Malta!

All this blogging has become the joke of the town! PN on one side and the PL on the other!! Throwing mud at each other but unfortunately some mud is left in one's hands! Remember the mid-week report in another English paper saying that Robert Musumeci was ordered by the PM not to submit his nomination!! Maltese politics has become a farce because of all these fairy-tales and inventive speculations! Good job Lawrence Gonzi laughs at all this and leads in his own way!!

These contestants are the only two from the PN side who can get the required 50 % to get elected in this casual election. It is no prerogative of the PM who sits for the election. They had a right and so they applied.
What is odd is why Parliament had to adjourn for such a long time, and more worrying is why is the PN wishing that none of them gets the required votes?
I know the answer and hope that all voters in the next election keep this in mind when casting their vote.
You either play their game or else you are out!

@M Cachia...you are missing something.
It is true that MPs have a right for their private life...after all this is a private matter. But their private life is also part of their baggage in parliament. It is upon their principles, values and their way of looking at lfe that they base ( I hope) their decisions. At election times, yes, I do look at their private life before voting. A public person needs to expose himself to public scrutiny. After all it is this guy who is going to decide for myself in the next 5 years.

If neither one of Messrs Musumeci and Micallef fail to attain at least half of a quota, Gonzi will still be entitled to so-opt one member for his side - not necessarily one of these two.
Meanwhile, it is amusing to hear Mr Martinelli implying that these two gentlemen are like "bits and pieces" eyed by a scrapyard, or "rejects" that "may be recycled"...!

Feb 13th 2010, 14:57
Some bloggers are calling this as a "Shame". What is so shamefull that a candidate exercises his constitutional right to contest a casual election? What does one's private life has to do with all this? In parliament we need people with guts and will power rather that sainthood. In Maltese there is a saying which I beleive has some biblical connotations as well and which goes something as follows: "Min ma hux hati jitfa' l-ewwel gebla". I dare anybody out there and especially those bloggers who are manifesting themselves as saints to have a go at it! Let people live their private lives the way they want. This is a free country after all or am I missing something?????
