Poetry, gifts, saccharine-coated lyrics, happy-ever-after films: for centuries, we have tried our best to define love and repeatedly failed. And that's because love is a life-long labyrinthine pursuit. It is clean and messy, bitter and sweet and can leave you humming or groaning, Sunday-lunch full or with a rumbling heart, craving for more.

In M magazine, out tomorrow with The Times, love is all this and more. To celebrate St Valentine's Day with a difference, Davinia Hamilton sets up two men with their dream dates.

Following love till the end, Veronica Stivala interviews two former couples on why their heart couldn't go on. Anything could come between two couples, including jobs and careers. Christian Peregin listens to men who manage to pursue the same careers as their partners. For a dose of brotherly love, Michael Vella meets with sports commentators George and Christian Micallef.

Love survives, even in poverty. In 2009, 15 per cent of the population in Malta lived below the poverty line. David Schembri sees pride and resilience in Valletta's poorer areas.

M also takes a look at Tony Cassar Darien's photo album and shares memories with former Territorial army volunteers.

M is produced by MediaMaker Limited and published by Allied Newspapers Limited. Its editor is Stanley Borg.
