Thousands head for Nadur carnival

The popularity of the Nadur Carnival seems to have risen to unrivalled proportions as could be seen from early this afternoon when the queues for the ferry to Gozo dragged on to Ghadira.
This spontaneous adult carnival, which peaks tomorrow, received some bad press last year following the arrest of a number of people who dressed up as Jesus Christ and as nuns.
Amid condemnation from the bishops, the revellers ended up in court for choosing costumes deemed to be illegal and offensive to the Roman Catholic religion.
One young man was given a one-month suspended jail term for dressing up as Jesus. This was deemed as excessive censorship by some who argued it threatened the spontaneous character of the Nadur carnival.
In reaction, a group was set up on Facebook with a page entitled Friends of Jesus: Nadur 2010, which said it was organising a "peaceful protest against a modern-day inquisition".
The group said it hoped to encourage hundreds of people to dress up as Jesus in an attempt to overwhelm any fear of retribution "by numbers".
A few days ago, the police rock bands performing in Nadur to submit their planned repertoire for vetting.
But they later said they had "reconsidered the decision".
Carnival celebrations started in Valletta today with an assembly of dance companies along Merchant Street followed by a street parade show composed of the King Carnival float, masks and bands along Merchant Street, St John Street and Republic Street.

Maria did u say keep Gozo tidy, u must be joking even up to this morning our street is littered with broken plastic bags that the cats had a good nibble at over night, and with the wind blowing like hell, the street is absolutely disgusting with empty bottles of wine, tins and empty plastic egg packets and what not., i wonder who the culprits are? what a coincidence the visitors from out of space (no name mentioned) come over to our lovely clean island and make a mess of it all., and we are not even Gozitans, but happen to live in Gozo and thank christ not in Malta. * PLEASE FRIENDS TRY!!!! AND KEEP THE PLACE TIDY, AND PLACE YOUR LITTER SECURILY IN PROPER RUBBISH/CARBAGE BAGS CALL WHAT U WILL. Show a bit of respect to Gozo. *****Muchas Gracias Amigos.*****

"Maltese making their way to Gozo, i must remember to lock my car and take the key out our front door lock."
The same way that the Maltese people should remember to hold on tight to their wallets as they would definitely be skinned.........as usual! You definiteley forget that if it weren't for us Maltese, Gozo would just have the odd money spending tourist and not ride on to the gravy train with events like Carnival, Easter and Santa Maria.
People should start realising how cheap Sicily is when compared to Gozo.

It was not bad press last year which Nadur carnival received but thanks to the puritan attitude of the church and to this paper it received a big boost in popularity. The media is building up people's expectations a few days before carnival and then due to curiosity people flock to Nadur to see the free flowing madness, vulgarity amid confusion, congestion and alcohol drinking. I wonder how many breath analysis tests the police will perform tonight. But carnival is a form of an escapism from our daily problems and depressions!! ENJOY NADUR CARNIVAL.

Why? Why? Why? Gozo is beautiful when there is no one around ... not after waiting for hours in a queue .... and for what? To spend a weekend surrounded by people making inordinate amounts of noise while playing dress-up. Kind of makes you realise what kind childish mentality so many Maltese have. As a kind reminder to all the fools in that queue - you can't dress up as Jesus, the Pope, a nuns, apostles, an Imam, suicide bomber, an illegal immigrant, any politician, a door (from a band club), or do anything that might offend any narrow minded morals found on this island .... my friends it's time to grow up.

hi, will it be wiser if we in Malta can do something better than in Gozo and stay at home thus avoiding all this unnecessary hassle and expense

Hear Hear Miss Buttigieg you tell'em my girl, someone has to put the Maltese in their place. They are most welcomed as long as they know this is not Malta, and we are proud of our little island.......no nicking and no messing up the place. Cheers.

Please keep the Nadur Carnival clean and enjoy yourselfs. People don't have disrespect other people by dressing up as nuns, priest or Jesus. You can have fun by being yourselves.

@Maria Buttigieg
it's because of people like you that I hardly ever bother going to Gozo anymore. Instead of thanking God that many Maltese still consider Gozo as a holiday destination, you try to rip them off and insult them to their face to boot. Issa meta n-nies, bhali, jibdew jindunaw li tigik iktar irhisa tmur weekend Sqallija bir-Ryanair oqhodu eqirdu li qed tmutu bil-guh u li tort tal-Gvern ta...

@ Maria Buttigieg - May I kindly remind you that keeping your vehicle unlocked and the key in your front door are both deemed as an offence and you can be fined by the police. I can also notice that you don't have a business in Gozo right ? Just look at the picture and at least try to imagine what kind of cash we Maltese will leave behind at Gozo this weekend !!

@Maria Buttigieg
First of all, inorder to make such allegations, you need to have proof the a Maltese person did something to you ...as far as everyone knows criminals exist also in Gozo and not only in Malta! Secondly, you Gozitans must thank us for coming to your Island and generate commerce instead boycotting as some people suggested! Last but not least, we are in 2010, living in a civilised country where keys and locks exist ... not like a third world country where people still live in unlockable huts and caves!
If you prefer to leave your car unlocked and the keys hanging in the front door i'm sorry to tell you ... imma min jilghab man-nar jinharaq!
Regards :)

Careful what you wish for, you might get it. A tunnel or bridge, aside from the infrastructural impact, will change Gozo's character completely. Do you want that? I don't presume to have the answer, but a proper cost/benefit analysis has to be carried out and not on the basis of who shouts loudest, either. Leave that type of discussion for Xarabank.

You can buy tickets on-line when you're going to the cinema, is it possible to buy E-Tickets for the Ferry? Doesn't seem to be available on their website.

SHAME SHAME SHAME for gozo channel. There is a problem with issuing the tickets, and instead of using simple common sense and pay tickets by cash and use some control they leave us in queque till ghadira bay. I have already spend 1 hour infornt on 2 empty ships waiting till the problem of tickets is fixed. this is only in gozo.....we gozitans need a bridge, we need a bridge because we cannot afford the gozo channel inefficiency.
