Environmentalist sues for libel
A libel suit against Daphne Caruana Galizia was this morning filed by environmentalist Astrid Vella in her personal capacity and in her role as coordinator of the NGO Flimkien Ghal Ambjent Ahjar.
She said that comments made in Ms Caruana Galizia’s blog “Daphne Caruana Galizia’s notebook – Running Commentary” were libellous in her regard.

Joseph V. Grech. Your logic is truly amazing. Incidentally, have you an axe to grind yourself, against speculators, perhaps? No, hold it, I am no speculator, far from it. Thank you very much, I and my dearest ones need no environmentalists to act for us and have nothing to be grateful to them for. Don't you realize that your rabid defence of environmentalists now give away your true political colours.
I. Cilia. I agree with you completely.

You are wrong Mr. Spiteri, FAA did speak out vehemently about the destruction of Attard, Lija and Balzan. If you had attended the two press conferences we held on this subject you would know how we protested about the very issues you raise, ie. the blocking of residents’ light and air, increased traffic and destruction of urban cores.
We also tackled the subject of the Wied Incita quarry, ask the residents who attended the meeting we held at Attard Civic Centre. The fact that you don’t know about these initiatives strikes me that you might be one of those armchair critics who likes to knock, but does not like to get his hands dirty when the need arises.
As regards the villa in the Attard/Zebbug valley, I am not aware of this case but then we can’t be expected to know about everything that’s going on,especially with 400 applications a week flowing in to MEPA. If you are so concerned about this case, how come you have not reported it to us on our website?In fact, why don't you join us as a volunteer to do something tangible about the destruction of our quality of life. http://www.faa.org.mt/become_a_member

@J. Spiteri:
Maybe you should set up your own environmental pressure group. No one is stopping you.
Well done Astrid for all the work you do. They should thank you, not mocker and ridicule your personality and work. They'll soon run out of plates anyway!

Yes, environmentalist can take care of our environment, b ut why are they so politically motivated. Why hasn't anyone proested against a villa, built most probably illegally in the past few days, in the valley between Attard and Zebbug, situated around 700 metres away from a well known hardware store in the Attard- Zebbug road. Or to a villa or two at Fawarra?
And to the distruction of most of Attard/Lija/Balzan, through the replacement of detached or semi-detached houses by multistorey apartments - ruining the neighbours sunlight availability but also increasing the traffic.
Or why there were no protests from the FAA and the ramblers, against the illegal, dangerous and unhealthy way that a certain quarry in Wied Incita is being utlisied and filled up with uncontrolled waste!
All this smells of political expediency. Sorry, though a convined environmentalist at heart, Malta;s environmentalists do not convince me!

It is amzing how some people take sides without knowing what the comment was! They are happy to be led blindly!

The same blogger boasts of the million or so people who visit her blog. Even if that were true the people who go in only do so in the same way hat people gather round the scene of a bloody murder. It has nothing to do with sympathy towards anyone - it is just morbid curiosity that afterward leaves one emotionally drained and with bitter thoughts in one's head.

i am reasoning things out..
sorry while I certainly applaud environmental protection I think that the current methods used by environmentalists ( both locally and abroad in certain cases) aspire more to the boy who cried wolf scenario..
an when this happens i personally tend to lose credibility in many of our so called protectors of this island...
and please note that environmental groups are just lobby groups... they represent those who have their same beliefs.. and are not a democratice representation of the community.. and i am not a speculator or any other person against the environment or anything of the sort but in my eyes, the actions and ranting leave a lot to be desired..
I have to add that while i do find DCG's blog amusing at times i certainly do not agree with all that she writes, particularly personal matters... i am a strong believer of the saying "biex tiskongra trid tkun pur" and in my eyes no one is "pur". Everyone has hidden skeletons in their cupboard...

@ i. cilia - Don't be so dramatic man!
Surely you must know deep down that what you are saying is unjust - mere silly drivel unbacked by actual facts.
Envrionmentalists work hard to preserve Malta's environment from the speculative few. They act on YOUR behalf and on behalf of your dearest ones! Don't be so ungrateful please. I appeal to you to reason things out calmly. man!

The trouble is that the activities i.cilia ascribes to environmentalists are acceptable in any working democracy. So much so that they are done under the broad light of day. Were they not, the targets would seek redress in the courts. The blog character assassins cannot claim to observe the same standards.

of course i agree with both...
environmentalists should never allow muck to be thrown at them...
they should only throw muck at others themselves, criticise everyone and everything under the sun, speak up after consultation periods have expired, rally protests against everyone and everything...
and anyone who throws muck at them should be sued for libel, imprisoned and the key thrown away...

@D. Calleja -
From what you say it certainly looks like YOU yourself believe it is YOUR ''prerogative and privilege'' to throw muck at others!
Have you an axe to grind - for the speculators perhaps?

"Sincere environmentalists certainly cannot allow anybody to throw muck at them!"
You're absolutely right . . . spot on! How dare they?!
That's the envilonmentalists prerogative and privelege!!!
