New minister sworn in
New Health Minister Joseph Cassar was sworn in this morning by President George Abela.
The ceremony took place at the Palace in Valletta in the presence of, among others, the Chief Justice, the Prime Minister, the Attorney General and members of Dr Cassar's family.
A psychiatrist by profession, Dr Cassar takes over responsibilities for the health sector from John Dalli, who is now European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy.
Dr Cassar's immediate priorities are the current reform of primary healthcare and dealing with a shortage of beds at Mater Dei Hospital.
His appointment was announced last night in a Cabinet reshuffle.
Most of Mr Dalli's other former responsibilities in the Ministry of Social Policy were assigned to Dolores Cristina, who also remains responsible for education.
However her former responsibilities for culture were added to the responsibilities of Parliamentary Secretary Mario de Marco (see separate story).

The President of the Republic...Have to see that The Republic be above and Absolute when it comes to the running of our Nation...........The kissing of the Cross in a public affair can only cause segregation between the PEOPLE of our beloved Republic.
I hope that my fellow Christian compatriots understand my sincere message I am trying to convey.....without the need of mortification to enlighten them.......

@ Charles J. Buttigieg :
Maybe the Government really needs a Surgeon (I think at this point, a good compass will suit better to find back the 'winning' track for the Party & to find the easy way to get Malta out of this %%$^%^% situation we're in). But from your writings I assume that even you need a good nurse to cure the bruises you collected through the years will all the defeats (tkaxkiriet) your party achieved.. Just to remind you all your Party's TKAXKIRIET: 1981(But your Party won that one with the Musical Chairs Law) 1987,1992,1996 (because although your party won, for the farce it turned out, it was more convenient for your Party to lose again), 1998, REFERENDUM, 2003,2008 ....
Now I left you the dots after 2008 because maybe someone of your party's spokesmen will repeat some STUPID mistakes during the next electoral campaign (like others made in the past ones) & in that case you'll have to add 2013 to that list (Although that I think that even with all possible mistakes your party can do, they're not going TO FAIL AGAIN) !!!

"Never seized to be amazed"
Nobody is seizing you to be amazed, but you can cease the nonsense! Something is hurting you really bad these days, seeing how many interventions you made on this article alone!
But then the Labour Party, formerly the Malta Labour Party and now no longer the Labour Party but the 'Moviment' never ceases to amaze the public by its twists and U-turns, its lack of vision, with two deputy leaders who do not even know what the leader stands for (abortion-divorce) and whose only vision does not go beyond Castille.
So, in the meantime, just dream on what a true Labour Party has been missing all these years. Until the Moviment re-examines what it really stands for, the only wave of popularity is just from within the existing already converted ranks.
Regarding your remark that, ' A general surgeon would also do a better job, I like to point out that better still a neurosurgeon would still be the best idea. He would be busy for years performing lobotomies!

Our forefathers fought wars to defend our island, defend our faith, we maintained our christian roots whenever we were occupied and oppressed, we stood up and shouted, WE ARE CHRISTIANS.
We are a free nation, we posses traditions, culture built on these values and as an island, we are listed in the acts of the apostles that ST Paul was shiprecked in Malta and converted the island to cristiandom.
So if you do not like it here, if you do not want to share our values and you can help yourself to another value which our forefathers fought to defend, that is
the right to LEAVE.

Could the new Minister of Health, Dr Joe Cassar, take it as his first task to tell the Maltese tax-paying public the full cost of refugees and illegal immigrants - in terms of medicine, doctors' services, service of Mater Dei hospital etc. We know it's high because some diseases are particularly associated with people originating in sub Sahara Africa. But the true costs are split and hidden under various items of the Government's accounts.

How can a Prime Minsiter be so weak. How can anyone manage two ministries the size of Education and Social Policy. The weakness shown by Dr Gonzi by not being able to move Mrs Debono to Education from Gozo is typical of this government -- do not do anything. And the people of my age used to complain of Borg Olivier in the sixties. He was speedy gonzales when compared to Lawrence Gonzi.

You just make such a comment in Saudi Arabia and see where you end up.
We kiss the Cross because we are a Catholic country and proud of it. Other Christianity is what made us what we are so we have to respect it. Other faiths are welcome but they have to abide by our tradiitions.

In 1996,Dr. Sant appointed a Parliamentary Secretary for Gozo instead of a Ministerial post. Some of us still remember the criticism he got for it by most Gozitans and all the PN opposition in Parliament. Looks like now the Gozitans would have a part time Parliamentary Secretary. Good show Laurence, keep up the good work to salvage what’s left of Gonzipn.
