Elderly woman run over

A 71-year-old woman is fighting for her life after she was run over while crossing Tower Road, Sliema, yesterday.

The woman was crossing next to Fond Għadir when she was hit by a white Maruti car driven by a 43-year-old Kalkara woman at around 12.10 p.m.

On impact, the woman was thrown onto the car's bonnet and into the windscreen, which shattered.

Passers-by called for assistance, with the police arriving within minutes. The woman was rushed to hospital, where it was established that she was critically injured.

The street was closed to traffic until an onsite magisterial inquiry was held.
