John Dalli steps down

John Dalli has resigned as minister and as an MP.

He sent his letter of resignation from the Cabinet to the Prime Minister this evening while his letter of resignation from the House of Representatives was sent to the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

His resignations followed the appointment of the new European Commission earlier today. Mr Dalli has taken over as Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy.

Mr Dalli had been an MP since 1987. He was Finance Minister for 10 years and also served as Foreign Minister and Parliamentary Secretary for Industry.
