The Malta Weightlifting Association has just organised its first competition of the year, held at the Cottonera Sports Complex.

Emanuel Schembri, currently preparing for the Commonwealth Games qualifiers, stood out from the rest of his competitors when he snatched 113kgs and 115kgs, a new national record. He eventually finished first overall on points.

A number of personal bests were also established on the day.

There was an increase of 9kgs for a total of 135kgs by Clyde Sammut as Clint Sammut improve his PB to 140kgs, an addition of 7kgs. Ryan Agius's new best tally is now 144kgs while the youngest lifter of the competition, Rodmar Pulis, increased his total by 5kgs for a lift of 160kgs.

Mark Sapiano also registered a new PB - 170kgs - and Christian Saliba improved marginally to 170kgs as well.

Clive Zammit had a Clean and Jerk of 102kg, for a total of 195kgs, while Stephen Borg had a personal best lift of 122kgs for a total of 212kgs.

Other significant lifts were registered by Clint Grech, 195kgs, and Noel Coleiro, 215kgs.

There were a number of new lifters taking part in the competition at Cottonera SC. Among those who left their mark were Brandon Spiteri (108kgs), Cleaven Cutajar (100kgs) and Nigel McCarthy (95kgs).
