Street science in San Ġwann

Children need not be cooped up in a classroom to learn physics or chemistry as six localities embark on transforming their streets into fun laboratories aimed at bringing science to the community.

The first in a series of six Science in the Community festivals will take place in San Ġwann tomorrow when Lourdes Square will be filled with interactive science exhibits and educational stands. Similar festivals will be held in St Paul's Bay, Marsascala, Mqabba, Xagħra and Mtarfa throughout the year.

"The idea is to attract the community and engage them in a day of fun and learning through our interactive science exhibits and other demos," a government spokesman said.

The festivals are organised by the Malta Council for Science and Technology, in collaboration with the Resources Ministry.

The event forms part of a larger EU-funded Science Popularisation Campaign that kicked off in November with a science festival at the University of Malta. The San Ġwann festival will take place between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
