Skiving Gozitan teachers suspended for three days
Gozo Ministry led disciplinary proceedings
Three teachers who reported sick for work but instead went on a London shopping trip were suspended for three days without pay by a disciplinary board, the Education Ministry has confirmed.
The three female teachers had reported sick on October 30 last year but were on an early morning flight to London. The shopping trip lasted until November 3, spanning the weekend and two school holidays.
A doctor, sent by the Victoria Gozo college principal, who is ultimately responsible for all Gozitan schools, did not find the teachers at home when visiting on the same day they reported sick.
The teachers presented medical certificates to justify their absence, according to the Education Ministry.
However, after receiving reports they were on a flight to London, disciplinary proceedings were instituted by the Gozo Ministry.
The Education Ministry brushed off responsibility when asked whether it was referring the case to the police for further investigation on possible incorrect use of medical certificates.
"This is not in our competence. The Gozo Ministry led disciplinary proceedings. You may wish to check with them what further action, if any, they will be taking," a spokesman for the Education Ministry said.
A spokesman for the Gozo Ministry said they had legal advice not to disclose any information related to the case, quoting Public Service Commission regulations that deal with disciplinary procedures.
"In view of article 40 of the Subsidiary Legislation titled Disciplinary Procedure in the Public Service Commission Regulations, the information cannot be given or disclosed to any person, without having first obtained the written permission of the Prime Minister," the spokesman said.
Article 40 states that: "No member of the commission, nor the secretary, nor any member of the staff of the commission, nor any public officer, board or authority, charged with powers and functions under these regulations, nor any other person shall, without the written permission of the Prime Minister, publish or disclose to any person, other than in the exercise of his official function, the contents of any document, communication or information whatsoever relating to any action taken under these regulations, which has come to his notice or knowledge."
The disciplinary board was appointed in the first week of December and a decision was taken at the end of January.

These teachers have been given the maximum penalty for their irresponsible acts. Shame on them if they repeat these acts! The comments I see here are not very nice... I guess it's a case of whoever doesn't have a guilty concsience could throw the first stone!!!

According to some health providers. Shopping can be a sickness. Maybe they were really sick. Maybe they need help. How can the doctor find them at home. They were shopping due to their addiction.

How foolish not to have simply gone for a shorter trip on the holiday days they were entitled to. Let it serve as a lesson to all not to deceive, whatever the motivation.

May be they needed more holidays. These are the same people who are always asking for more. I am sure that with more checks more abuses will surface.

So essentially these three individuals were retroactively granted three-days unpaid leave to go a holiday during the school year. Why couldn't they have been fired? There are plenty of qualified teachers looking for work.

Maybe they went shopping on Harley Street London for a better doctor. Many are not happy with the available medical health Services in Malta.

Mr.Barker,if a patient goes to a doctor and invents certain ailments the doctor is not always in a position to know like eg a back ache.It could be they said they have symtoms of swine flu.You cannot judge if you dont know the full details.

So... what about the doctor(s) who signed the "sick" notes?
