Immigrant denies leaving island illegally
An illegal immigrant who allegedly left Malta on a speedboat last October and was found out in Italy has denied the charge of leaving the island illegally. Bakar Amin, 30, allegedly paid €780 to a trafficker to leave the island on a speedboat.
He was picked up in Italy and sent back two days ago. Magistrate Antonio Micallef Trigona remanded him in custody. The accused is being represented by lawyer Mark Busuttil.
Police Inspector Edel Mary Camilleri prosecuted.

if the immigrant had applied for asylum in Malta, he was here legally and cannot be deported, but is subject to the same law and punishments as maltese citizens.

@ Igalea
It is the poor farmers who till the fields around Hal Far tent city who are doing a lot of supporting. Their crops and fruit disappears from the fields all the time.
Which explains why that Safi farmer was so irate when he caught a Libyan escapee in his field.

Why is he not deported forthwith?
Why are the Maltese citizens being made to support him and his ilk through their taxes?

This, and similar incidents prove what a farce the idea of One Europe and the Schengen Agreement really are. If countries that are included in the Schengen Treaty are considered borderless between them, then why is it illegal to move from one country to another freely?

Where does Mr Bakar Amin come from? Is it from a country that entitles him to refugee status?
How much has he cost the Maltese taxpayer? The Italian police probably charge the cost of his return to Malta to the Maltese government. Then there is legal aid, the cost of the police inspector, the magistrate ... And Judge Galea Debono (see top story) complains that the magistrates have a long waiting list of cases!
