Fugitive caught in Italy
Leonardo Ambrogio
An Italian man who jumped bail and left the island was caught in Italy last week after spending more than three months on the run.
It is the second time that Leandro Ambrogio, 45, has breached his bail conditions by flying to Italy.
Mr Ambrogio, who was born in Reggio Di Calabria but lived in Marsascala, has two pending court cases against him.
He was first arraigned last February for bashing the car of his daughter's boyfriend with a rock because, he said, he was not pleased with the relationship since the 50-year-old lover was 30 years older than his daughter.
He admitted to the charge but judgment was postponed to another day and he was granted bail on condition he did not leave the country without informing the courts. Yet, he flew to Italy in May, only to return in September when he was immediately arrested.
He was sentenced to 90 days in prison but appealed and was released on the same bail conditions.
Then, in November, he failed to appear in court again and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Now that he has been caught in Italy and brought back, his bail has been revoked and he is in preventive custody until he is arraigned in the coming days for breaching bail conditions again.
