Toyota recall: Transport Malta to contact owners
Owners of Toyota cars which are included in the worldwide accelerator pedal recall are to be contacted by Transport Malta and asked to contact the local importers, Michael Debono Ltd, for repairs.
Michael Debono Ltd (MDL) said when contacted that it had received a list of the affected cars and passed it to Transport Malta which will will now establish who the owners of the cars are.
MDL said it expects to receive the relevant parts in the last week of this month.
"On their receipt MDL will commence rectification work on vehicles involved; all work will be carried out at no cost to car owners."
The company said owners should be aware that an accelerator malfunction is not one that can develop suddenly and that it normally may occur in cold wet climates.
Owners noticing that the accelerator pedal becomes hard to depress, slow to return or is unsmooth during operation should contact MDL on telephone 22694000.
$2bln recall
Meanwhile, Toyota Motor Corp said it expects costs and lost sales from its massive safety recall to total $2 billion by the end of March, keeping it in the red for the year despite its strongest profit in six quarters.
Toyota's recall of more than eight million vehicles due to problems with unintended acceleration has wiped out $30 billion in share value, hurt its reputation and overshadowed what until just two weeks ago had been expected to be an upbeat story of improving earnings.
"Toyota's recall this time is unlike any other in auto industry history," said Lee Sung-Jae, an analyst at Kiwoom Securities in Seoul. "The scale is huge to begin with, and this deals a fatal blow to the very core value Toyota represented -- that is the quality of its cars."
In a further blow, Toyota is looking into dozens of complaints about inadequate braking on its new Prius hybrid on bumpy or frozen roads.
Toyota said it had identified and fixed a software problem related to its anti-lock braking system. A Toyota quality official said depressing the brakes further would activate normal braking on the car, meaning the glitch was not legally considered a safety hazard.
"This issue shows that we may have fallen short of the standards expected of us by our customers," Hiroyuki Yokoyama said, declining to say whether an official recall was planned.

@ Victor Vella: While respecting your comment, I don't agree with you. I can explain my comment if and when needed, but not on the web.

I should advise Citroen C1 and Peugeot 107 are the same as the Toyota Aygo.
The question should be asked if the Toyota Aygo is being recalled.
If the Aygo is recalled, are the respective dealers of Citroen and Peugeot doing the same?
Enlightenment expected!

If your car is affected you will recieve a letter from Michael Debono Ltd through Transport MALTA, Dont you read the news, besides of you go to toyota 's website and punch in our chassis number you will know if your car is recalled.
@J Hili I believe that the person who made a statement from Toyota Malta spelt this out immediately cars imported from Japan are not being reclled.
We should note one thing here, Michael Debono Ltd are the only agents who support people who bought second hand cars from overseas, they even extended my anti rust guarantee on a car I purchased in UK

I am a toyota owner, but since the first news was published in foreign media I haven't received any communication from MDL, whether my car is included in the worldwide accelerator pedal recall or not. Maybe this was a management decision, or a distraction from the customer care, whatever how does this compliment MDL's mission statement "AT MICHAEL DEBONO LTD WE SEEK TO ENSURE THE OPTIMUM OWNERSHIP EXPERIENCE FOR OUR CUSTOMERS WHILST ACHIEVING SUSTAINABLE GROWTH, ENHANCING QUALITY OF LIFE OF ALL OUR PERSONNEL AND SIMULTANEOUSLY RESPECTING THE ENVIRONMENT AND SOCIETY AS A WHOLE."?

BBC News say "Drivers of Peugeots and Citroens have contacted the BBC News website raising concerns. The Peugeot 107, Citroen C1 and the Toyota Aygo are essentially the same car with different styling and fittings and made at a Czech plant. As a result, Peugeot Citroen, Europe's second-biggest carmaker, will be recalling "fewer than 100,000" cars made with Toyota in Europe." http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/8496902.stm

This is a clear case where after learning How To Drive a driver should consider How To Control Emergency Situations --and there are variouse of these . However particularly one a for local conditions is Skid Control --and-- Car Control With Engine Power Off ---- N O T E !!--- Do Not Try THE ANY of these without proper road conditions ' management and if possibile from experts' advice

This issue will be costing a few billion dollars to Toyota. In the past Toyota has been a stalwart of high quality and I still beleive tha they are.
In my personal opinion they have dealt with this is the most appropriate and effective way despite all the hearsay. They have effectively shown that for them the safety of their customers is a paramount value which has no compromises.
I think we wil soon have gas as a button on the steering wheel or even better as totally Computer controlled via the first applications of AI.

What about the used Toyota cars imported from Japan? Who is to take responsibility for them?
