Fishermen equipped to fish for swordfish are to receive 70,000 euros in compensation for not being able to fish for two months last year after the season was closed to allow the species to be protected.

The compensation should help the fishermen adjust their equipment to be able to fish for other species in future.

The government said the compensation was being given from local funds and every member state of the EU was free to decide whether or not to give it.

The compensation would be paid as soon as the necessary verifications were carried out.
