Increase in utility costs threatening investment - GWU
Increases in the utility costs were threatening investment and undermining the creation of new employment, the General Workers’ Union said.
The union said that during discussions between its SMEs section and Nylon Knitting management for the renewal of the collective agreement, it was revealed that the company was presently faced with an additional cost of €2 million in water and electricity bills as a consequence of the increases in utility tariffs.
During the meeting, it became evident that the burden caused by the new utility tariffs hindered greatly the progression of talks between the union and management.
The GWU was also informed that the company was reconsidering the implementation of the final stages of the investment planned so much so that the said investment was now in danger of being shelved.
Nylon Knitting is one of many others, including ST, Toly Products, General Soft Drinks and Trelleborg that were rethinking their investment in view of the consequent difficulties they are facing by the new utility tariffs imposed by the government, the GWU said.
Apart from the additional costs caused by the new utility tariffs, the situation for the local industry worsened further with the announcement of a €28 increase per tonne of thin fuel oil, mainly used by industry.

Qatt hadt xi haga lura kull meta xi haga giet ipprivitazzata u l-gvern iffranka s-sussidju?
Ghalfejn ma jaghtix il-flus li jiffranki f'sussidji lill-poplu?
Mela hekk tajjeb, jitnehha s-sussidju, joghlew l-affarijiet, in-nies ma jinghataw xejn lura, u jkollhom ihallsu prezzijiet ghola ghax ikun tnehha s-sussidju.
Jaqilghuha darbtejn Zahra.
X'qed isir mis-sussidju li jkun iffranka l-gvern?
Fejn qed imur?
Fil-bir tas-skieken jew?

How very nice of the GWU. It wants the government to increase taxation for us students, workers and pensioners to pay the utility rates of companies including those of the GWU.

It is well and good for some that can afford them, for many it is a sore point.
You just pay your bills and get on with. The last thing that the GWU need is advise from people like you.

On 16 October 2009 it was reported in the Times of Malta that during the 2008, the EU27 contributed 39 percent of Malta’s FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) inflows while 30.3 per cent originated from Turkey.
Well, with 30.3 per cent of Malta’s FDI originated from Turkey coupled with the Smart city investment which is from Dubai (another country outside the EU) country. What do you think about FDI from EU?

Welcome to the dwindling group of Government apologists! Gonzi needs people like you to show their true colours and keep waving the flag. Especially at this hour when nothing seems to go right for our beleaguered government. What the GWU stated are facts - already confirmed clearly by both the Malta Employers' Association and by the Chamber of Commerce.

Yes we know.
Malta has much to offer however we are not Kuwait but an oil dependent country. When the world price of oil increases, we (Blue, Red, consumers, businesses) get hit hard. Grumbling gets you nowhere.

It is the GWU that has seriously threatened investment by opposing Malta's entry into the EU and not the government who is doing its best to generate more places of work by the introduction of excellent incentives and mesasures.
The utility costs are a reality of this time and the years ahead. There is no illusion in this. it's a fact that fuel prices are higher nowadays and whether we like it or not we have to pay for them. The people have to pay theirs and the companies have to do their part. What is the GWU suggesting, should the people pay for the ST, Toly etc? Plse GWU be clear
